MEMORANDUM FOR THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, OPERATIONS:
Subject: Screening at the Hoover Library.
1, A shipment of documents obtained by the Hoover Library in
China has recently been released in GIG custody to the Hoover Library
on the understanding that the material will be screened by GIG to ob-
tain any intelligence material of interest to the War and Navy De-
partments.
2. The material is believed to contain Russian information and
consists of eight cases.
3. It is requested that you arrange for a competent expert in
Chinese to proceed at the very earliest opportunity to the Hoover Re-
search Library, Palo Alto, California, to screen the material in
question, and arrange to forward copies or photostats of pertinent
intelligence material to Washington.
4. This matter has been discussed by ICAPS (Mr. William M. Adams)
with Mr. George Carey and it is understood that
may be made available on temporary duty status from the
Documents Branch for this purpose.
