for Language Lessons, Request for, dated
20 August 1949.
(b) Memorandum for All Foreign Branch Chiefs,
Subject, Authorization for Language Lessons,
dated 27 April 1949.
1. In reference (a), - personnel were authorized 25X1A6a
to study foreign languages at government expense for a six
:tonths t period.
2. In view of the policy subsequently set forth in
reference (b) to the effect that language lessons would be
approved for OSO staff employees on foreign duty at a cost
not to exceed :250.00 per employee, per fiscal year, it is
requested that the authorization previously provided to cover
the cost of language lessons for our - personnel for a 25X1A6a
period of six months, expiring in February, be extended to
cover the balance of the current fiscal year. The cost of 25X1A9a
these lessons at X3.00 a week each for Miss and
25X1A9aiiss - and y!;4.00 a week for Mr. for a 12 25X1A9a
,lonthst period will amount to y156.00 and x:.203.00 respectively.
3. Almost all written reports received by the
station are in a language other than English, and it is
therefore considered essential that the personnel of this
station maintain proficiency in the languages used in that
area,
