SUBJECT: Request for Permission to Attend Conference
on USSR. at SAIS
randum, is herewith supplied:
1. In accordance with the provisions of the memorandum dated
19 June, 1953, from the Director of Training concerning the method
for requesting permission to attend the one week conference on the
USSR. at the Sheraton-Park Hotel, sponsored by SAIS, Johns Hopkins
University, I should like to ask for: permission to personally attend
the meetings myself, in whole or in part, for the dual purpose of
spotting qualified individuals for Agency employment in USSR. areas,
and also to increase my own awareness of the problems this country
faces vis-a-vis the Soviet-Union. Since a large part of our recruitment
effort is directed toward convincing qualified people to work for us on
the Soviet problem, I would like to see if this conference would give
recruitment any new arguments to use in the field.

School, Brown University, two semesters post war; re-
ceived one-half necessary credits toward A.M. degree.
(f) I would like to attend the banquet, but cannot say at this
time that I will be able to do so.
