In order to gain entrance to the plant and laboratory building had to show the gate guards a pass or propusk; the pass issued was of plain brown calico, the outside of which was blank, _The inside contained the data illustrated on the rough sketch which is approximately to scale See page 13_7. There were two or three rubber stamps on the right lower half of the pass to indicate the gate permitted to USE All of the German specialists and carried the same passes. the Soviet laboratory personnel 50X1 50X1-HUM passes were provided yearly throufl the Soviet liaison 50X1-HUM official assigned to take care of the needs of group and were issued from the personnel office. Each time 50X1-HUM had to supply two recent photos o e 50X1-HUM to receive a new pass offidial, one of which was used on the pass. If one iorgot a ?ass had to return to his home to find it. Once-one lost his pass, but apparently he was able to give a VS ? excuse because he was issued 'another wihout being punished. Occasion- ally the gate guard would spot-check the briefcases or bundles carried by the German or Soviet personnel. 6. Our working papers were looked up by a Soviet woman laboratori. worker in sharge of security at the end of each day in an old,' worn metal cabinet fitted with 'a padlock. They could be taken out of the plant after obtaining written permission from the director of N1OPIK. However, members of our group often took their papers home whenever they felt like doing so and nobody was ever caught. The papers themselves bore no manner of classification but were Identified by the signature of the individual submitting the paper.
