I did not assist at the firing of these rockets The target error WAS greater, however, than I had predicted. I had hoped for the shots to be contained inside a circle of 5 km, radius. I do not knoW What the actual errors in range and azimuth amounted to. I think that better target accuracy can be achieved only .by accurate Control of turning time of the athodyd. For this purpose tam aAa working on a simple form of accelerometer which can be included in the fuel system and will out off the , fuel supply when a definite missile speed has been reached. gitaile not yet availiblej I think that normal (rifled) guns of suitable caliber will be used. From conversation with villiting Soviet civilians (who Were probably naval officers), I gathered that celibate, 38 cm,, 30.5 to 28 cm, were of interest. I myself fired over 200 .missiles of this type (but of smaller oaliber-15 cm:1 while in the:USSR (so-called E series). SECRET -2- A series of 20 larger missiles (28-cm.caliber) were made ______butt do not know what the Soviets did.with them; tred'they were fired and that a range of over 300 km, was reached. Durina he test of the so-called E series j at least four conferences took place at Pitilovo. All iile Soviet members of these conferences wore civilian dress, but judging from their conversation and familiarity with naval problems, I am of the opinion that several members were naval officers. I believe athodyd belief that toward house the erection tests, was manned building gathered SUDAKOV Institute do not or any that Putilovo was not the center of ballistic or research in the USSR. One of the reasons for my is the poorness and paucity of equipment. It is true the end of my stay, a new building was.put up to the supersonic windtunnel. Although I superintended ' of this tunnel and carried out.some preliminary I subsequently had no aooess to this building which entirely by Soviets. I do not think that this was ever likely to become a research center, / on the other hand from conversation with DAVICHER, and.KRACHIN that there already existed a Central of Munitions which dealt with such problems. I know the location of this institute nor did this other inetitute particinate I attended a conference at the research institute known as ZIAM ifibjeot 735. X 11/2,2 German Military Plan of Moscow, Special edition VI/4j/ Machine Gun Flak, 2, 3.75 and 6 cm. caliber. The latter has very high Vo (1000 m/sec, estimated from light trace). The 2 cm. gun is arranged in arrays of four or six guns, while the larger ' caliber are of the twin type, with. rates of fire of the order of 1210/miae I have seen and heard . these guns in operation at Putilovo. I am of the' opinion that the Soviets showed interest in the rocket-assisted shells of 3.75s 6 and 8 cm, caliber developed by AULER5EG-14/70 These are fired from normal rifled guns and are fitted with contact fuses. . I believe that the Soviets will develop the ? athodyd shell as the best defense.
