1. The Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock has manufactured 42 standard Diesel engines
(1400 hp. at 650 RPM) since the beginning of 1953. A production increase
of six of these is planned for 1954. Because there is not enough space
available, an enlargement of the main shop where these engines are built
is planned for the spring of 1954.
2. Only four 8-cylinder 2-stroke engines have been built. They have 1160 hp.
at 375 RPM. They are installed as additional auxiliary engines in ships
built in Soviet Zone yards between 1949 and 1951. The engines are said to
be very economical. They run very quietly and steadily when throttled down
to 290 to 300 RPM and 900 hp.
3. The plant, which originally consisted only of one large shop, has grown con-
siderably in the past year and a half. "bout 2,100 workers are now employed.
A complete new shop has been set up for repairing marine engines. More new
building construction will be begun in the summer of 1954 in connection with
the further development of the two-stroke engine; manufacture of 48 of these
engines is planned for 1955. A 2600 hp. engine at 250 RPM is wanted which
shall be capable of reduction to 2000 hp. with satisfactory working performance.
4. It is not certain that the developmental work and the added production facilities
will be ready by 1955. There is talk of new directives for shipbuilding in the
DDR to come into force January 19j4, in connection with which the Rostock works
will have to alter its v.~..uuccion. The plant, however, is nowise prepared to do
this. Still further hindrances would be added in that case to the already pre-
vailing difficulties about materials. Deliveries of materials promised from the
VESTA in Leipzig (Martin Luther Ring 13) have suddenly been cancelled.
5. A standard Diesel engine for a Volga passenger ship has to be delivered by the
end of November for the Neptun shipyard.
