Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/05/26: CIA-RDP81-01036R000200010059-8 the 200 Bulgarian officers.' who - - 25X1, have been studying in the-Sovist Union have now returned to Bulgaria. The exact date of their return is not established, but it seelns to be relatively recent, though the officers have been in Bulgaria long enough for some of them to receive their new assignments in their own country. 2. In the USSR these officers entered various courses in theory and ideology. After completing these courses, they were distributed among units of the Soviet Army, for a period of practical application of what they had learned. A number of this group have been seen among Soviet units in the Caucasus. Most of these Bulgarian officers speak Russian well. 3. After passing a very stiff examination, these. Bulgarian officers were promoted to colonel (polkovnik). They returned to Bulgaria with this rank. They have already been sent to different army corps as political officers and also as officer instructors. As this group was originally selected from among the most combative and faithful Communist elements, it. may be taken for granted that after this period of study in the :'oviet Union they will be thoroughly trusted by the Soviet authorities. - end - SECRET DISTRIBUTION ?
