are mostly in the frontier zones bordering on Yugoslavia and the Black Sea. In
other frontier zones, toward Bulgaria., along the Danube and Dobruja, and toward
Awptry and the USSR, surveillance over the frontier is naturally rather lax.

!T r!e.. are at, present, ten regiments of "Graniceri", or Frontier Bards. They are

tens along the Yugoslav frontier, they carry the Soviet 7.62 rifle.

Prontier Guardsman is equipped with an ordinary Czechoslovak-wade ?ZB" rt-
pating rifle, caliber 7.92. The Frontier Guards also use "ZB" machine guns,
Caliber 7.92 with a rectangular magazine carrying forty rounds, on the upper

5. Rations are good in the Frontier Guards: 500 grams of bread, coffee, 150 grams
of marmalade, soup, neat (three times a week), pastry, free cigarettes, or Dandy
for non-smokers. The pay is fifteen to twenty lei (new currency) a month.

6. Y'nstruction includes the inevitable Comouuni.t ideology, the study of surveillance,
theory-of arms, tactic=s, attack and defense. All this is theoretical. Practical
in+truction includes: handling of weaapon;, fire, cleaning arms, training in
attack and defense., various oviet '"gadget ;`" (trues).
7. The Black ''ea coast is guarded by the -trcul Navelor Graniceri. This force has
its headquarters at Braila, for the anube and the Danube delta and at Con.;tana
for the sea coast proper. It o eratrs sixteen guard motorboats *tr.ty guard
boats ("vedettes") of Fturmboot type., sloops, supply barges, vaF,ious oar-propelled
boats.
8. The motorboats of the coast gu~~rd .., . t,=.tloned as follows :
a. One each at Mangalia, Soul Ina, Sig] Braila, Tulcea, Cernavoda, Gturgiu, Cblafat,
Turnu Severin.
b. Four at Constan4a.
c. Two str0ale4i.
9. The guardboat:; are built with Mteei hull, fifteen meters long, 3.5 meters beam,
and are equipped with a Diesel motor of the Sulzer type, 120 hp. They have 13
tons displacement. There ire, however, some fast guard boats with wooden hulls,
covered with sheet iron in some place,v. These are only nine meters long, with a
two meter beam, drawing 60 on of water. Their motors are of 35 hp. and are
German made. They have a speed of 30 to 35 kilometers per hour.
10. Barges '(shlep) 'aro h+r1,1 t in Rumanian dockyards at Bt? -ila. They displace forty,
tons 'and have a sheet ironhull. They are 20 'meters long.; with a bestir of six
peters. Under steam they have a speed of 20 kilometers per';heur. Fach-ini.t has
one conwutder, one junior officer, one machinist, one- sech rniclan, one h asman,
crew of armed' sailors, number not ;:t2ted.
