There is a central training camp for parachute troops in the Pusky-lrabovec i7 area. It is coastanded by Soviets, but the parachutists being trained also come from Poland, and Czechoslovakia. The commandant is the Soviet Maj. Pirogov, who has a Polish and a Czech assistant. 2. The Poles and Czechs of the camp are organized into provisional battalions. They come from various units in the Polish and Czech Armies, and are under the best NCOs available in those armies.. Teachers of par chute technique are also trained at this point. 3. Aside from training instructors, the camp has the purpose of getting soldiers from the Polish and Czech Armies accustomed to working together and under Soviet command., while they learn the latest battle methods. 4. The Soviets are not at all satisfied with the morale, training and fighting spirit of the Czech formations. They keep them under tight discipline and punish them frequently. 5. The first experiments with the common training of Soviets Polish and Czech parachutists began in 1952. Apparently the Soviets were satisfied with the results, since they ordered that such common training.,and exercises should be hold in 1954 on a much larger scale, under Soviet leadership. The Poles were handled with special care. Similar common trading will probably be held for the other arms, but it is at present confined to parachutists, on whom the Soviets lay great importance. 25X1 This report Is for the Use within the USA of the Intelligence com;rn:nts of the Departments or Agencies indicated above.
