MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: 14 January Tasking re Current Crises
1. During the debrief on 14 January the Director asked that the
following actions be taken:
a. We need to ensure that we know, and can provide on short
notice, everything possible with regard to the hostages.
We need to sort out all our evidence as to whether any
of the hostages have been moved; leaving no stone unturned.
(Action: Iran Task Force in coordination with DDO)
b. Get State paper on the follow-up on invasion of
Czechoslovakia. (Action: NFAC, 16 January)
c. Paper assessing (in connection with what arms we are
considering providing
This can be
coordinated with a paper State is doing, if possible,
to ensure our views are reflected. (Action: NFAC, due
COB 16 January)
d. Paper assessing the political impact in the region of
the insertion of a US military presence in the form of
(a) prepositioned equipment afloat, and (h) a deployed
Marine Amphibious Unit (1500-1800 Marines in five ships).

e. Prepare a short, IISS-type rundown on the PDRY military
capability, including Soviet and Cuban presence and
support for use at 17 January SCC. (Action: D/OSR,
due COB 16 January)
f. The Director referred to a White House request for CIA's
assessment of a list of possible contingencies (see
attached). This assessment, first cut quick and dirty,
is to be completed as quickly as possible. Work to
continue to develop assessments more fully. (Action:
NFAC, quick and dirty due to. DCI COB 16 January)
