MORNING MEETING - 2 h1arch 1979
The DDCI was in the chair.
1. I briefed on thel
situation on the Sino-Vietnamese
-- The Chinese would appear to be seizing more terri-
tory along the border but not trying to push further.
We were beginning to suspect that they were going to
do what recommended -- stop, announce
they had won, and go home, once Lang Son had fallen.

Vietnamese Gammentar
Hanoi leveled its .strongest charges to date against
the US and .its allies in a harsh tirade broadcast
yesterday on Vietnam's domestic radio. The broadcast-
claimed that during his recent trig to the US and Japan,
Deng Xiaoping-won "approval and support"-far Peking's
actions against Vietnam. The broadcast accused the US
and .its allies of "deliberately belittling" the serious-
ness of the Chinese invasion. It called US collusion with
China part of the "sinister policy of the Carter
Administration," and charged that the US and its allies
must bear responsibility for this "crime against the
Vietnamese .people" and the resultant threat to. the eace
and stability of Southeast Asia and the world. ~ .25X1
Chinese Commentary
Chinese officials are continuing to imply that China
will soon withdraw .its military forces from Vietnam.
.According to the Japanese press, Chinese Vice Premier
Gu Mu (Ku Mu} said today that China's military action
has been progressing smoothly and that "China will be
able to pull out .its troops as originally scheduled."
His .statements are similar to those made yesterday
by Vice Premier Li Xiannian (Li Hsien-nien}. Li told
journalists in Beijing that Chinese farces had. dealt
"fatal blows" to Vietnamese regular units and wexe close
to achieving their goals, after which they would be with-
drawn. Both officials indicated, however, that the Chinese
would attack again if provoked. ~~ 25X1

Thailand-Kampuchea-Vietnam
Bangkok yesterday issLed a statement categorically
denying allegations that it has allowed a Thai island
to be used as a base for supp-lying Kampuchean resistance
forces. .The Thai Foreign Ministry statement is a response
to charges made two days earlier by .the pro-Hanoi government
in Phriom Penh,- which demanded that Thailand .stop all acts
violating its sovereignty. In a Nhan Dan editorial today,
Hanoi cited "western sources and newspapers" to support 25X1
.its puppet's protest. It questioned Thai neutrality and
"appealed" to Bangkok, for the sake of peace and stability
in the region, not to cooperate with resupply efforts.
