MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT Use of the KC-135 for In-flight Refueling
of the A-12
1. In response to several questions raised by
concerning above subject, Lt
on or on 16 May 1962,
following information for relay to
a. The procedure recommended by
for preparing the KC-135 refueling system to
accommodate PF.-1 fuel is to completely drain the tanker
of its present load and flush with 5,000 gallons of PP-1.
A milipore sample will be taken from the tank upon com-
pletion of pumping the 5,000 gallons into the KC-135.
This sample will be studied and fuel then pumped out of
the tanker and disposed of. believes, although
he does not have any experien a ss yet with this proce-
duro, that the single flushing should adequately cleanse
the KC-135 refueling system for delivery of clean PF- 1
fuel into the A-12.
b. The determination as to the use of Castle
AFB as a storage point for PP i ' for loading into the
tanker is still undecided. Apparently, the decision to
develop storage facilities for PP-3 at Castle rests with
Colonel Geary and with coordination by Colonel Beerli of
DPD. a
c. The nomination for security clearance of the
ground support team of six enlisted mai ten nee personnel
for the KC-135 tanker operating at is being
handled by Lt. Cal, Wilson, AFCIG- . n ormss me that
he is in contact with Colonel Ellsworth Powell at SAC,
to obtain the names of the personnel planned for the
operation. He anticipates no problem in having these
personnel security cleared by 15 June.
