C:/IAB/OG/NAR and NFAC/ORPA, reviewed with them in a general way, the difficulty in arriving at reliable statistics with respect to illicit drug traffic. Chunta understood the problems involved, appreciated what little information we were able to give him and indicated that he may get back to us with some specific questions. 22. LIAISON Jason Cooke, Staff Associate, subcommittee on inter-American Affairs, House International Relations Committee, called to express the Subcommittee's appreciation for the paper on South and Central American illegal migration, which we had sent to the Committee recently. Cooke indicated that it was a very impressive piece of work, thorough in its analyses and that it was an important addition to the Committee's literature on the subject. I thanked Cooke for his thoughtfulness and called NFAC/CSS, asking him to convey the appreci.a ti_on o: e Committee to the people who prepared the report. 23. LIAISON Ryan Conroy, who is on the staff o ; Senator Alan D. Cranston (D., Calif.), called to ask why wca?had sent suggested replies on two recent constituent inquiries, instead of an Agency letter? I Jthe case of nd the when the subject matter was NURSItive, we employ the suggested reply method to avoid getting official comment out in the open. I assured her that the facts contained in the suggested reply were accurate. She indicated the Senator preferred to receive letters from the Agency and I informed her that we do this in all cases, except in those unusual circumstances where the matter is currently sensitive. 24. LIAISON Cary Orlando, on the staff of Representative Lawrence P. McDonald (D., Ga.), called to see whethe Qhad picked up the Soviet media reaction to U N. Ambassac ndrew Young's comments on political prisoners. He indicated that the Congressman planned to have a press conference on this subject later in the day. After checking with FBIS/Liaison I informed Orlando that the Library of Congress had wire service terminal and he could check it to hi.msel.f seew1at the Soviet media reaction may have been.
