House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence staff, to meetings.with representatives of three Agency.components which deal with academia in one degree or another. The briefings were as follows: information on "foreign materials" that0 acquires. He will probably want to know what they are and how a. At 9:00 a.m. briefed Mr. Johnson in SE11 ,on relationship and involvement with the academic world. Mr. Johnson's principal. concerns were: the degree to which the academics involved were witting that they. were dealing with CIA; whether the association was altogether voluntary; and the degree to which the relationship between the academics and CIA was or was not known to the academics' colleagues. It emerged fairly clearly that Mr. Johnson would prefer to see any relation- ship between CIA and the academics be totally overt, but he seemed to accept the premise that many academics preferred it otherwise. In therocess ,of giving Mr. Johnson an explanation of association with academics he was provi airly thorough briefing on. how operates. I suspect that Mr. Johnson will be coming back to request acquires them. b.
