U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
PERMANENT SELECT COMMITTEE
ON INTELLIGENCE
August 3, 1978
Honorable Stansfield Turner
Director of Central Intelligence
Washington, D.C. 20505
__ 10
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence,
Subcommittee on Evaluation, is conducting a series of
hearings on terrorism. The hearings will cover both the
nature of the terrorist threat and the ability of the
United States Government to prevent or respond to terrorist
actions.
I would like to invite a senior representative of the
CIA to provide expert testimony on August 16, 1978, at
9:00 a.m. The testimony should cover the role of CIA in
covert action, collection requirements, clandestine collec-
tion, technical surveillance, and in all-source analysis
related to the international terrorist problem. The
development of community-wide collection requirements
against terrorism should also be addressed.
The witness should be prepared to answer questions on
the current terrorist threat and the problem of patron state
support. Although this hearing will be closed and the trans-
cript classified, I would also like an unclassified statement
prepared on the terrorism problem that can be released by
the Committee on the day of the hearing.
The Committee staff member assigned to this matter
is Mr. Herbert Romerstein, at telephone number 225-7823.
With every good wish, I am
