You were mighty thoughtful to write as you
did on June 22, and I am indeed grateful.
With kind regards and best wishes,
Very sincerely,
Dan Daniel
I look forward to the pleasure of receiving
the unclassified information which you will provide.
In my judgment, your policy is a wise one, in that we
need to make more data available to the public, but,
at the same time, hold more closely those matters which
would compromise our national security.

The Honorable Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr.
Speaker of the House
United States House of Representatives
E-204 The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Mr. Speaker:
The CIA regularly publishes unclassified reports on
a wide variety of topics. Normally, these publications
are distributed to individuals and to institutions that
subscribe through the Library of Congress.
I personally place a great deal of importance on-
this program and have been attempting to expand it.
We all fully recognize the vital necessity of main-
taining the security of classified information. However,
some of the CIA's information and analysis can be made
available on an unclassified basis. It is my hope that
by putting this material into the public domain, we will
be better able to protect the remaining information which
must continue to be secret.
Since I would hope that many of our unclassified
publications would be useful to you, I am taking
the liberty of placing you on our distribution list. A
number of the publications you will receive are periodi-
cals, such as the Eceno.nic Indicators Weekly Review;
others are ad hoc publications that deal with topics
such as the Soviet leadership, the Chinese economy,
and the world energy outlook.
Unfortunately, we just are not ec ui?ped to handle
constituent requests ;or unclassified publications,
and I itiould suggest that these requests h-_ directed
to the Phot.oduplication Services of the Library of
Congress.

If you ever find that receiving our unclassi-
fied publications is becoming a burden, please let
me know so that we can either stop the distribution
or narrow its focus as you desire.
Yours sincerely,
