Dear Admiral Turner:
Enclosed for your review are two copies of our proposed
report "Investigation and Prosecution of Alleged Nazi War
Criminals Residing in the United States--A Lack of Progress
Surrounded by Controversy." This assignment was performed
at the request of the Chairman, House Judiciary Subcommittee
on Immigration, Citizenship, and International Law.
Due to the Chairman's desire to receive this report as
soon as possible, we would appreciate receiving the Agency's
written comments on the draft by May 5, 1978. We shall be
pleased to meet with your representatives if any questions
arise during the review of the draft. If a meeting is de-
sired, please contact Mr. Daniel F. Stanton, Associate Di-
rector, General Government Division, on 275-3641.
We wish to point out that the segments in the draft *per-
taining to your Agency have already been reviewed by your
representatives for sensitivity and declassification and ap-
proval to release the material in the draft was obtained on
April 24, 1978. Also, such approval was obtained from the
other Federal agencies mentioned in the draft.
As stated on the cover of the draft report, the report
is restricted and the material presented is subject to revis-
ion and should not be released for purposes other than review
and comment. The draft report and all copies (1) should be
safeguarded to prevent premature publication or unauthorized
use and (2) belong and must be returned on demand to GAO.
Your Department's comments will be incorporated in whole or
in part, in our final report.
