Dear Mr. Webster:
My Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and International Law
has been pursuing an inquiry into the presence in the United States of
alleged Nazi war criminals and the circumstances which led to the admission
of these individuals into this country.
The report on this subject recently issued by the General Accounting
Office as a result of an investigation initiated at my request on January
13, 1977 mentions the existence in the Federal Bureau of Investigation
of files on some 47 individuals allegedly in this category. The report,
however, is totally lacking in the details which are of paramount interest
to my Subcommittee..
I would therefore appreciate your making available to certain
members of the Subcommittee staff the complete files on these individuals
as soon as possible.
In the interim, I would be grateful if you would grant immediate
access by the staff to the summaries prepared on these cases for GAO.
Arrangements for the examination of the files and the summaries can
be.made with the Staff Director of the House Committee on the Judiciary,
Garner J. Cline, telephone number: 225-7709.
The staff members who would be designated to review the files and
the summaries have Secret security clearances granted by the Department
of State.
