S. LIAISON Pete Roman, on the Senate
Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Federal Spending Practices
and Open Government staff, called to report an anonymous tip he had
received and requested the opportunity to speak to two Agency employees,
whose names he provided me, about the existence of a "half a warehouse
full of defective safes from a subsidiary of Art Metal Corporation."
Roman agreed not to place the calls himself (he had their phone numbers)
until I had an opportunity to look into the matter. Subsequently, after
talking with Mike Malanick, ADD I called Roman and told him that I
would make arrangements for him to speak to the employees or we could
provide documentation on this buy in 1970 where the Agency had requested
Diebold safes and GSA ha-d instructed us that we must accept the Hillside
safes as they meet the specifications and Hillside is the low bidder.
Roman aid he felt the memoranda would
more an suit eir nee s.
