I I FOIA./LIAISON Received a call from Miss Lois Smith, in the Portland, Maine district office of Senator Edmund S. Muskie (D., Maine), asking how to roceed with obtaining information for a constituent, E I who thinks because of his past association in the 196 s with the Student for a Democratic Society (SDS), CIA might have information on him in our, files. I gave Miss Smith the name and address to pass on to the constituent and suggested she also have him send. along a notarized statement as to his identity for purposes of expediting his request. I also mentioned to her that we have a very large backlog of cases and it would probably take several months to complete any search for She thanked me and said she would so advise the constituent. 5. LIAISON Spoke to Jim Smith, on the Senate Armed Services Committee staff, to inform him that William L. Ball, III, of the Committee staff, for whpm clearances were requested, would require a current background l vestigation. Mr. Smith said he would ask the Defense Department to institute the same. 6. LIAISON Don Richbourg, on the staff of the House Appropriations u committee on Foreign Operations staff, called to check on the clearances of Barbara Rowan and Martha Talley, on the staff of the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, who were going to review documents in the Subcommittee offices that afternoon. Richbourg was provided the information. 7. BRIEFING Accompanied 25X1 NFAC/CS an WI, to a briefing of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Attending were: Thomas K. Latimer, Staff Director, and two other staff members: Mike O'Neil and Diane LaVoy. The briefing was on Soviet space shuttles and a current intelligence review. The briefing lasted from 10:00 to 11:00 and took place in Room 407, The Capitol. There were no outstanding questions. 8. LIAISON Lisa Kennedy, in the office of Representative Christopher Dodd (D. , Conn. ), called to ask whether there was any truth to the recent article claimin that :missiles have been introduced into Cuba. After checking with NFAC/CSS, I told her that v,?e5X1 have no evidence that there has been an introduction of missiles into Cuba; similarly, we have no evidence that, submarine pens have recently been built in Cuba.
