LIAISON Talked with Tom Latimer, Staff Director, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, concerning the Director's problem in committing himself to appearances on Tuesday mornings because of his weekly meeting with the President V-1/at that time; the unclassified papers on Soviet civil defense and Soviet defense expenditures and the status of our work on charter legislation. (See Memorandum for the Record.) '10 BRIEFING Accompanied Ted Shackley, A/DDO, to a meeting with Representative Norman Mineta (D., Calif.) to discuss past CIA relationships with news media. (This in response to Mr. Mineta's request for a briefin n our relationships with I Mr. Shackley indicated that 1n eepang wi ormer Director BUT s determination regarding relationships with news media, all relationships were terminated in 1975. We did not discuss any specific relationships with 25X1 25X1 12. LIAISON Received a call from Representative Robert c ory (R., l.) who was concerned about the prepared statement to be made by Morton Halperin in his testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Subcommitte5X1 on Oversight on relationships between intelligence agencies and the news media. Mr. McClory was particularly concerned about Hal erin's state- ments regarding the Richard Welch case and (See Memorandum for the Record.) LIAISON Sent by courier two letters to Chairman Edward Boland (D., Mass. ), House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The first letter was responding to the Chairman's letters of 15 and 19 December inviting the Director to testify before the Subcommittee on Legislation regarding proposed legislation to govern electronic surveillance for foreign intelligence purposes; the second was in response to the Chairman's letter of 22 December inviting the Director to appear before the Committee on 24 January at 9:00 a. in. to give his views as the head of the Intelligence Community on whether the figures representing the Intelligence Community and Intelligence Related Activities budgets should be made public. 24. I I EMPLOYMENT REQUESTS Pam, in the office of Senator Robert J. Dole (R., Kan.), called and requested five general pamphlets, five brochures about stenographers and five applications.
