11. LIAISON Thomas K. Latimer,
Staff Director, Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence,
called to ask for an update on the , with particul.a25
reference to the newspaper stories about utilization of

have apprised Fred Hitz, Legislative Counsel.
12. LIAISON Arlene Marek, House
Permanent o mi. ntelligence staff, called with
a constituent letter which Representative Bob Wilson (R., Calif.)
had received from Pfs. Barbara Lowerison regarding her brother,
Colonel Charles Joseph Scharf, who was shot down in Vietnam
on October 1, 1965. While the vast bulk of her inquiries
were directed at DOD, Ms. Lowerison believed that she was in
the process of appealing a CIA decision to withhold certain
information from her. I have passed this requirement on to
25X1 of our office, and expect to be able to respond
to Ms. Mare s inquiry tomorrow.
13. LIAISON Along with I --1 25
25X1 of our office, to ce with Danny Chil.ds, Senate Select Committee
on Intelligence staff, to clarify a request that he had levied
25X1 on IC Staff. Bill Miller, Staff Director, wants the
total number of electronic messages sent and received by CIA
during calendar year 1977. Ile also wants the total intelligence
(NFAC) production for the same time frame. I have passed these
requests on to NFAC/CSS, and Director, 25

1. I THIRD AGENCY Parks Stearns,
FBI Legislative Liaison, informed me that as far as he can
determine the FBI has not declassified the FBI portions of
GAO's report on He also said that the FBI is considering
submitting written comments to GAO on the report. Parks is checking
this out and will let us know. We will send Stearns a copy of
the report with our changes for declassification together with a
copy of the Director's comments to Mr. Elmer Staats, Comptroller
General, GAO.
2. LIAISON Called Margaret McKenna, Deputy
Counsel to the President, and informed her that our Economic
analysts would be briefing Peter Sullivan, staff member of the
Senate Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Permanent Investigations,
on Soviet oil exploration technology on Friday, 15 September.
4. LIAISON Received a call from
Lawrence Thompson, Executive Assistant to Senator Ernest F.
Hollings (D., S. Car.), who requested two copies of every
unclassified atlas the Agency puts out. After checking with
NFAC/CSS, I sent Thompson two copies of the following:
'! s of the 1%orld's Nations Africa, Ma s_of_the World's Nations -
Western Hemisphere, USSR Agriculture Atlas, Atlas- Issues in
the Middle East, Indian Ocean Atlas, and National Basic
Intelligence Factbook. I also sent him one copy of the Polar
Regions Atlas since he already had one copy of it.
5. EMPLOYMENT REQUEST Received a
call from Nan Wilson, in the office of Senator Robert B.
Morgan (D., N. Car.), who requested that I set up an interview
for a constituent,F- _j After checking with 14ARO,
I told GIs. Wilson that an appointment had been scheduled for
10:00 a.m., Tuesday, 12 September.
