COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN RELATIONS
WASHINGTON. D.C. 20510
's Flie c,-
Yesterday New York Magazine published a list of alleged SAVAK
agents which, it claims, were "checked with" persons in the FBI, State
Department, and with "Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffers."
While in our case this is technically correct, it is grossly misleading.
Mr. Rose did "check with" us -- but we refused to comment. Mr.
Rose telephoned on August 25 seeking verification of the accuracy of
the list. I responded that we were unable to comment because any
information we possessed on that subject would have been obtained from
agencies of our intelligence and law enforcement community pursuant to
memoranda of understanding which required their participation in deter-
mining whether such information could be released to the public. He
telephoned last week, again seeking verification of the list, and again
we declined to comment. We have requested that New York Magazine publish
a correction in its next issue.
This is confirmed in the enclosed telegram from Mr. Rose to Senator
McGovern, which I asked him to transmit as soon as I learned of the
article's publication.
Neither John Ritch nor I have disclosed to New York Magazine or to
any other third party any information given us pursuant to the memoranda
of understanding with the CIA or with any other department or agency of
the executive branch. I value what I believe is a relationship of trust
and confidence that we have established over months of working together
and I simply wanted to assure you that that trust has not been violated.
Sincerely,
Michael Glennon
Legal Counsel
