INCREASED RESERVE STORAGE OF SCUD EQUIPMENT AT
BOLOGOYE TACTICAL SURFACE-TO-SURFACE MISSILE
SUPPORT FACILITY, USSR (S)
1. (S/D) Imagery of Bologoye Tactical Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) Support Facility
USSR, since early 1979 has revealed a major, steady increase in reserve storage 25X1
of SCUD transporter-erector-launchers (TELs), SCUD resupply semitrailers, and other equip-
ment. The Bologoye facility (Figure 1) is in the northern Moscow Military District and is probably
a central/strategic reserve depot of the Soviet Ground Forces Main Rocket and Artillery Directo-
rate (GRAU). The increase may indicate cessation of Soviet formation of second-generation/cadre
SCUD brigades.
2. (S/D) The depot has a large capacity in its warehouses and in open storage for equipment
and spare parts for rocket and artillery troops armament. Prior to 1979, up to six SCUD A/B
TELs-JSU* were usually observed in open storage. Beginning in the spring of 1979, however, a
major increase in the numbers of SCUD launchers and resupply semitrailers was seen. By E:] 25X1
41 TELs and 14 semitrailers were in open storage (Figure 2). 25X1
3. (S/D) A number of recent Soviet sources have reported the existence of second-genera-
tion/cadre SCUD brigades. Apparently, the brigades were formed as MAZ-543 wheeled launchers
were introduced into active SCUD brigades, and the older SCUD tracked TELs were released. The
procedure is exemplified by reporting on an SSM school and cadre SCUD brigade at Staryy
Medved Army Barracks AL-1 in the Leningrad Military District. A Soviet' who 25X1
served at the school in 1970 and 71 gave details of its organization and equipping with tracked
launchers. Another Soviet2 who served at the school in 1974 and 75 described an organization with
a postal address identical to that of the first source but stated that the unit was equipped with
MAZ-543 TELs. He also reported the collocation of a second-generation brigade, not mentioned
by the first source, equipped with older launchers.
4. (S/D) The increased allocation of older, tracked TELs to the strategic reserve at Bologoye
may indicate that the creation process for second-generation SCUD brigades is complete. The
Soviets have probably attained the number of brigades envisaged for their frontal and reserve
force structure.
