(S/D) A new artillery division has been identified in the Siberian Military District, USSR (Figure 1). On elements of this division were seen in a newly constructed vehicle park (Figure 2) outside Pogorelovka Civil Defense Installation (BE Subsequent imagery revealed an antitank regiment/brigade, a 152mm gun howitzer ML-20 regiment, a probable multiple rocket launcher (MRL) regiment, a possible antitank (AT) regiment, and at least four battalions of probable 160mm mortars. Analyst's Comments 2. (S/D) This unit is atypical of Soviet artillery divisions, which usually consist of one 130mm field gun M-46 regiment, one ML-20 gun how- itzer regiment, one MRL regiment, and an AT regiment. Apparently, a combination of AT guns and mortars is replacing M-46s in this division. 3. (S/D) The creation of this unit is consistent with the upgrading process underway in the Siberian Military District. This unit also helps to fill a gap in artillery coverage along the Sino-Soviet and Soviet- Mongolian borders. FIGURE 1.
