Approved FoOlease 2002/ 1 '` A-RDP81 T0091V000100110022-7 m .emu PID - 13/65 10 February 1965 ? 9(~R~'flDtJ!i FOR : Executive Director, fl IC FROM: Chief, Photographic Intelligence Division, CIA. SUBJECT: Additional Graphics Support 1. A. recent survey was conducted in PID with emphasis on the support provided to the Branches by the assignment of an Illustrator to 088/PID in September 1964. 2. It appears that the uaality of the materials produced by this 25X1 A Illustrator, F-- I has in general been quite satisfactory, and in several cases, outstanding. It was necessary for him to make some adjust- ment in his work procedures since the re asented routines under which he labored in PD were quite dissimilar to the wide variety of assignments he has received in PIS. Seemingly, he has been able to adjust himself to this problem and by occasionally seeking guidance from some of the senior illustrators in PD, he has not only improved the quality of the graphics emanating from P1D, but has also improved his own proficiency through increased experience. 3. The primary concern which was expressed by each of the Branches is that additional graphical support is necessary within the Division. It is clear that one illustrator cannot possibly produce the graphics which are required to support PID i ice memoranda in response to CIA requesters. 25X1 A As you realize, does not produce obtained Lhro h TAY graphics which can be ug o-ugh routine procedures, but only those which are - required for priority projects with imminent due dates. In numerous instances, these products also involve close liaison with the analyst concerned in order to affect the desired result and under such conditions production in Pi: would be highly impractical. 4. D,~riug the five months has been with 0GS/PID, 25X1 A approximately 60% of his efforts have been devoted to projects for the Geo-Hilitary Branch, chiefly due to the short due dates on their requirements from DDP. As a consequence, very little graphics support has been given to the other three Branches. In fact, understanding the overloaded condition 25X1 A under which is working (he has averaged 36 hours overtime per month), they have requested only limited support from hin. The net result of this situation is that most of necessary graphics are still being produced Approved For Releas /30 : CIA-RDP81 T00990R000100110022-7 Approved Fo elease 2002/10/30: CIA-RDP81 T00 000100110022-7 by PIG in the Branches, including G MB. `T=his, of course, not only consumes valuable aa.a-hours, which could be more gainfully utilized in doing FI, but also results in graphics which are less them "professional" in quality. In addition, it is felt that an increased graphics capability within the Division, while resulting in the more rapid production of graphics, would also provide better products through iaa#~ination. In other words, the present H- produced "simple" graphics would be replaced with more effective materials and at lover actual costs. 5. The present workload dezands that the Pis be relieved of any non-Fl tasks which consume their time and which can be performed efficiently by support personnel. A current study has determixod that approximately 7 hours per week 25X1 A is devotees by the average PI to the production of graphics materials. This problem will undoubtedly become even more acute in the future due to the increased requirements which are anticipated as it-age quality, as well as film quantities, increaeei throuh the adoption of new collection systems. 25X1A 6. It is therefore requested that your approval be given for assignment of two additional illustrators to this Division. Providing they have a general range of experience, their grade level is relatively unitaportant since it is 25X1A DI3TBIBUTIon Oriel; & 1 - Addresses 1 - Chief, PD/PIC 1 - Asst, for Admin 2 - CIA/PID Approved For Release 2002/10/30 : CIA-RDP81 T00990R000100110022-7 Approved Foolease 2002/10/30 : CIA-RDP81 T009000100110022-7 2/10/65 Attachment to memorandum PID/0SS-474/65 dated 10 February 1965 GraphicsProduction in PID- has determined that approximately OSS 7 hours per week is devoted by the average P n o the production of graphics materials.) In terms of the numbers of PI's in the division it is apparent that considerable graphics support is necessary. This figure does not include special types of graphics which, due to their nature, cannot be performed by other than PI personnel. 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/10/30 : CIA-RDP81 T00990R000100110022-7
