Democrat and he even tried to prevent Doilf uss from
destroying the Social Democrat Party. He shed tears
because of the coming disaater but was too weak to
carry his point and to make Dollfuss desist from his
plan,.
He had always the right intention but was too weak to
get hid; way. Even in his own family his influence wry s
not sufficient to prevent some of his children from
becoming Nazis, first clandestinely 6Lnd later *openly.
Guido Schmidt, the well-known Nazi, was for several
years the liaison officer between the pregident and

the chancellor. It, seems certain that Miklas did not'
recognize the true character of. Schmidt.
