Bulgaria has fairly large reserves of oil shale; same of which are on tihe surface. The best-known area is a few kilometers north of the cit y , of Bresnik, where there is a vein of oil shale about 50 meters in ~ w_dth, ~ between layers of sandstone. The best vein is about seven meters thi ck ~ , - SS and contains l2 to 1` 3 percent of crude oil. Reserves in this area are ~r~. ref k estimated at about 30 million tons. The second re ~ ~ gxon is 10 to .l2 kilo- . meters west of the Batonow2i-Radomir railroad, near Radomir and Kdstandil ~ a around the village of Pelatikovo. ~.n area about 20 to 30 kilometers in _ length has been exploited.
