Academician Kupriyanov and general-mayor of the Medical $ervioe y. I.
Banaytie, Professor, lief surgeon of the Moscow Front in 19141 were
the authors of one of the first textbooks on military-field surge
which was published at the beginning of World War II. This book
ooitaine the personal experiences of tho authors gained during the
soviet-?innieh War, 1939-1940, and is quite popular among military

and to m dal "defense of Moscow." He is a graduate of the Militant
Medical Aaadenq and ii a regular army doctor. Refore the war he headed
a ohair of surgery e8umab3y at the Military Medical Aoads ?.
's. 3. Yudin. Colonel, Medioul Service, Aativc Member of the AOade of
Medical Sciences U88R and Laureate of Malin Prise gave muoh attention
to the implementation of methode for the treatment of hip wounds
through the use of thiok plaster caste (g1ukhaya gipsovaya povyazka~
the use of sulfamide preparations, and to the reduction of the nwaber
of wartime abdominal oasualtie s. He is the aathor of more then one
hundred and fifty eoientifio works, a mlmbG? of mark eurgioal societies
in the soviet Union and abroad, and the recipient of the Order of
Lenin and the Order of the Red Star.
M. N. Akhutin. Oonera1-1eytenant, Medical Service, Doctor of
Medical Scienoes, Professor, Chief Surgeon of the N-th Front, is !s6 years
old. He is a graduate of the Red Army Military Medioal Academe, and a
regular ara~r doctor. As a eurgeon, he participated in the Civil War,
in battles with the Japanese at Lake Khasan, with the Japanese-
Manohurians on the Khalkin-Oo1 River, and also in the war with the Finns.
Prior to world War II he directed a surgical clinic.
He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, Order of the ned Banner,
Order of the Patriotic War First Class, and the Order of the ked Star,
and holds the title "Honored Worker of Science."
Akhutin ie widely recognized as one of the outstanding military-
field surgeons of the Soviet Union. He used t1 e experience gained in
the above-mentioned battles to w rite a textbook on military-field
surgery, which proved valuable in the training of soviet personnel in
the principal problems of organization of surgical aid for troops in
the field.

Profleseor Yelan?kiy partioipated in the battles along the 1Q alkin-
Oc1 River and in Finland. During the early part of World War II he
wrote a brli.t annual on milit$ry$ield eurgery. The value of this
book can beet be explained by the fast that during the war three printinge
were required. Later, he rewrote this book and entitled his new work
"Instruotiona on MilitaryJield surgery." Yelanekiy was responsible for
introducing the idea of performing eoientifio reeearoh work at the front
which was devoted to the study of current military medical experience.
This work was participated in not only by scientific research ineti-
tutee 1aboratorfile, epeoial ohaire and olinios, but also by numeroue
institutions of the field medical service.
In 19L~2, Yelanskiy was largely responsible for the organization
of a scientific medical council under the l4edioal "datfnietration of
the N-th Front.
At its first session, held on 10 November 19L2, the council
prepared the 1943 scientific reeearoh work plan for medical research
institutions of the front. some of the more important problems of
this plan included: organizational problems of medioal-evacuation
services for troops; prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment of shock;
aseptice and antiseptics in field oonditione; treatment of gunehot wounds
and fraoturesj early diagnosis and treatment of anaerobic infeotions;
ekull brain, chest, ant stomach injuries, and others. Moet of these
problems have been worked out and results have been presented at scientific

considered to be an outstanding teacher who is frequently observed

He was a regimental physician during World Wax' I, and in the next
20 years worked in the clinic of a medioal faculty. wring the past
10 years he has been a professor and direotor of a clinic. His scientific
research, monographs, and the works of his students on tubercular and
nontuberoular infections of the lungs are well-known in soviet medioal
circlesI
