There were nine T-49 tanks in the tank battalion of the 103rd' Meez. Regt. 9 3rd Tank. Div.,, at Mlada, near Milovice . 50414, E 14-547. The T-49 tank was a version of the Soviet T-34 tank with t "he following improvements a. The turret has a lower silhouette brought about through rede- sign to create an oblong-turtle-shaped turret (oast) similar in deei n to the JS.3 turret. It has 's smooth top (with-no d. eupole,e) with a 12.9 mm. heavy machine gone in front of the right ihateh. The machine gun is independently traversed and is used for AA and ground fire. Two periscopes are employed through the top of the turretp one front and left of center and the other rear of center and left. the gun 25X1 is from 85 to 120 mm. and has no muzzle brake. T e turret is 1.5 cm., thicker than that of the T-'34. In January' 1953, in a speech at a conference of officers from' the 103rd Metz. Regt., a Sr. Lt. CADRIK (fnu), CO of the Tank'Bn., 103rd'Mecz Regt., said that the T-49 tank was being produced in Czechoslovak factories. He stated: that the engine was being made in the Skoda Works in Pilsen and that other parts were being made in the Skoda Works in Mlada Boleslav and in an arms lant (which he did not identify) in Strakonice /N 49-16, E 13-5g. He said that the turrets were being produced at the CKD (Cesko-Moravska kolben danek) Works in Prague. CADRIK mentioned the-T-49 as an example of the increasing recognition. being accorded Czechoslovak workmanship, saying that th was streamlined in comparison with the Soviet T-34, whit was very crudely made.
