THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 50X1 1. there was a rather serious outbreak of hoof and mouth disease ksorataud) at the Taht Kolkhoz, near Abja 5 58-07, 50X1 E 25-2g, Abja Rayon, Estonia. I heard that this disease had spread through all southern Estonia, taking its toll of many cattle. I do not know whether this disease was checked during the winter, but in there was another serious outbreak. Both times a quarantine was imposed on the movement of cattle and also on those people whose animals were stricken. I do not know what measures were taken to control the disease, and I think local veterinaries con- 50X1 ducted the treatments. At the time the .4 disease had not yet been stopped. During the winter of 1952-1953, many cattle also died from lack of fodder. 50X1 2. While passing through Latvia the hoof and mouth disease had spread through most or nortnern Latia and that there was as little success in coping with it as there was in Estonia. Also, as in Estonia, a strict quarantine had been im- posed on the movement of cattle. I do not know what measures were taken to stop the disease in Latvia. 3. I never heard of any other livestock diseases anywhere in the USSR. CONFIDENTIAL Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/05/28: CIA-RDP82-00046R000300020005-1
