2. The Artificial Fiber Factory was located in a densely populated area
in the town of Tomaszow IN 51-32, E 20-01 , and consisted of a series
of work halls and several two or three-stor buildings. The factory
was well-known prior to World War'II and it appeared
to be a well-organized and efficient one. employed in 1952-.,about
6,000 workers who worked in three shifts. The technical director was
OSTROUCH.
3. The factory was subordinate to the Central Administration of the
Fiber Industry which was under the Ministry of the Chemical Industry.
4. Cellulose in sheet form and sulphide of carbon were used as basic raw
materials. The cellulose was treated with caustic potash and after
being pressed in hydraulic presses to the state of alkali cellulose,
it was shredded. It was then placed into a "ripening room" where it
remained in rotating tanks for several days at a temperature of about
250 C. The product was then dissolved in a solution of carbon
bisulphate (CS2) in a vacuum. This liquid was compressed through
platinum sieves into an acid bath (H2SO4) where the artificial silk
fibers were formed. The fibers were then rinsed, twisted, dyed, and
rewound. The thickness of the thread varied according to the number
of fibers used; a thread could be made of from several to 300 fibers.
