1.. The Research Institute of Metallurgy (Inst tut Metalurgji) was located
in the' center of Gliwice LT 50-17, E 18-40 and occupied a large
modern,three-story brick 'bbuilding. Offices and laboratories were in
the front part of the building; in the rear there was a large workshop
well equipped with different, new machine tools (lathes, milling
machines, drilling machines, and presses).
2. .The Institute was subordinate to the Ministry of Foundries (Minister-
stwo Hutnictwa). I have no detailed information on its activities.
I was there only once in the spring of 1952?and then in only one
laboratory of the Institute. This laboratory conducted research on
permanent magnets and magnetic alloys. Professor SMOLINSKI from the
Warsaw Polytechnic institute cooperated with the Institute of
Metallurgy in this field. I heard that the institute produced up to
June 1953,emall series of cores not exceeding a few hundred kilograms.
