Reception of Foreign Broadcasts DATE OF INFORMATION PLACE ACQUIRED 50X1 THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION REPORT Ir. 50X1 DATE DISTR. 3.0t, March 1954 NO. OF PAGES 4 REFERENCES: SOURCE 50X1 1. There was an old military broadcasting station located in a villa on Mimes Street in Prague-Bubeneo ffnnex A, Point . There were two 'broadcast t9wers of simple iron construction about 23 In. high on the grounds surround/ng the villa. A few soldiers were always stationed there. I do not know when this broadcast station was built but it was in operation in 1945. In the early summer of 1952 the army occupied a neighboring villa ffnnex A, Point 37 as well as the ground surrounding this villa between Manes Street and the Prague- Kladno railroad station. Four or five new iron broadcast towers about 20 m. high were erected on the site. I heard from the people living in the area that this new broadcasting station was a jamming ? station. In fact, as soon as the new broadcast towers were erected,? ' listening to RFE as well as to VOA broadcasts was rendered impossi- ble by heavy interference. This same interference was experienced by the people living on Pelle Street 2Tnnex A, Point 27) on Na Magistrale Street nnex A, Point 1.97, as well as on Ovenecka Street .5nnex A, Point ff.or the exact location of these two stations, see enlargement Annex A, Points 1 and 2.g 2. In the early summer of 1952, a brick building, about 10 x 10 m., as well as about three broadcasting towers, each about 20 m. high, were erected on the western side of the Strahov Stadium. ffee Annex B, Point ij Pe#Ple told me that this was a jamming station, be- cause as so o as this construction was built, . listening to RPE and VOA broadcasts was rendered impossible by heavy interference. This interference was experienced by the people living on Belohorska Street, near the Brevnov Monastery streetcar station. niee Annex B, Point 22 Declassified - Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/06/19: CIA-RDP82-00046R000300250010-0 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/06/19: CIA-RDP82-00046R000300250010-0 SECRET 50X1 - 2 - A jamming station was erected in the-Prague-lirsovice brewery in June 1953. The people noticed an odd construction in one of the brewery 'buildings and shortly thereafter, reception of RFE and VOA broadcasts was rendered impossible in the surrounding areas'. This interference was experienced by the people living on Krale Jiriho Avenue and 'those living in the vicinity of Pankrac Prison. In general, RFE broadcasts suffered the greatest iptArfArAn9e and VOA followed. -BBC-London was jammed very little. I Iknow 50:00 about Paris broadcasts. The AFN-Nuernberg broadcasts were not jammed at all. Starting at 0630 hours, all the wave lengths used by RPE Were jammed very intensely in the whole Prague area. Very often, listening was rendered impossible. However, listening after 2300 hours was better as the Jamming was in the background. Jamming was even greater on Saturday and Sunday, Always one of the wave lengths of RFS was not so heavily jammed as were the other wave lengths; rthink this was becaUse it enabled the Czechoslovak police to listen too. However, this lighter jamming switched from one frequency to another at short 15 minute intervals. Annexes: A.
