Radio Monitoring Station in Bucharest
THIS IS UNEVA1UATED INFORMATION
1. The monitoring station was a radio facility which belonged to
the Rumanian Post Office. It was considered a secret installation,
had an unlisted telephone number, but until the last date of
observation, 1952, was guarded only by one watch dog.

from this post 52 after contracting tuberculosis
the function of this station was to monitor all
n ra o communications, such as SOVROMTRANSPORT, the TARS
civilian airline, and radio "ham" broadcasts, as well as to assure
that all civilian radio stations adhered to the various regulations
set up by the Rumanian Post Office. The station was originally.
organized in 1949 by GOLUMBOVICI and his immediate supervisor, 'an
engineer named Ilie STAN who was also chief of the Rumanian Post
Office Radio Communications Section. The station employed three or
four radio operators.

transmissions between Bucharest and Urziceni which were frequently
damaged during the winter months. GOLUA+BOVICI hoped his transmitter
would alleviate this situation and that his project would be accepted 25X1

a Rumanian-made direction finder, (see Annex B) Which UMBOVICI
was testing The
direction f naer, u y the Vestiorul Plant, was a portable 25X1
model, intended for installation in sedan-type vehicles and which
would possibly be used by the Seouritate to detect clandestine radio
stations. The set had eight tubes which included the following:
1T4, 134, and 1R5. It operated on dry cell batteries mounted
inside the case which measured 40x25 - 30x30 cm. The loop antenna
consisted of a hollow metal tube, one centimeter wide with the
core filled with wires. The loop did not rotate but the entire
set, Mounted on a turntable had t be manually rotated when in

3. The Post Office Radio Monitoring Station was located in the east side
of Paroul.Car91 inside the northeast tower of an old and small fortress
known in Rumanian as "Turnul lui Tepee (The tower of Vlad Tepee). The
stone masonry tower was 10 to 15 m. high with a diameter of approximately
five meters. The Radio Electric Control Center (Centrul de Control
Radio Electric 1 rooms at the top of the tower. Between
1949 and 1952 following permanent radio equipment in 25X1

There were four pole masts arranged in a square pattern from which the
antennas were strung. The pole nearest the tower-had a direction find-
ing antenna on top which consisted of three, five.-meter long, horizontal
dipoles. This direction finding antenna was used for the 10-meter band
and rotated manually From inside the tower by means of a wire and,. pulley
attached to it.
