The topographical briggaades had seven or eight German female helpers* whereas the personiel of the. geophysical brigades included about 20 per cent female helpers. Each brigade, topo- graphical or geophysical, had one Soviet Army guard. Objektgewerksohaft, or Object Union Manager, together with the Shaft Union Manager was directly responsible to the Soviet and German Personnel Manager. The Object Union Manager's duty was to organize lectures for political indoctrination of the workers and to award people for perfe-Qt attendance and fulfillment of norms for all shafts. The Shaft Union Manager had a similar task to that of the Object Union Manager, but his was in a specific shaft. Normabteilung, or Norm Department, set up norms for each shaft for periods of 10 days and one month. This department had one shaft norm-setter (Sehaohtnormierer) or norm regulator (Normierer), whose task was to see that norms were fulfilled, and one work surveyor (Aufaesser) who at the end of each day measured the actual distance of the tunnel dug by each hewer, Planabteilung, or Planning Department, made provisional plans for periods of one month, one year, and five years for all shafts. The work norm technician, Teohnisohe Arbeitenorabearbeiter) was responsible for the effectiveness of the technical side,for example, machinery and work implements, in order to achieve the prescribed work-norm for each shaft. Directly responsible to him was a time keeper (Zeitnehrcer) for workers. Markacheiderei or Underground Surveying Department. One surveyor was assigned to each shaft giving instructions to the hewers as to the direction in which the excavation should proceed.' The Specific Underground Surveying Department (Reviermarsoheiderei) was responsi- ble for mapping certain portions of areas for the possible discovery of uranium deposits. Three to four helpers assisted the surveyor. Geologisohe Abteilung or Geology Department. Bach sohaft was assigned one chief Soviet and three or four German geologists Whose task was to determine the shaft ? uranium layers with the help of geological collectors. German geologists further had to .supervise ore exploitation and to determine the percentage-yield of the ore. 7.; Easse, or Treasury, had the financial responsibility of the object and had the tae k of getting money on pay days each month, the 13th and 28th,,from .the administration headquarters, in Chemnitz Sier-Sahonau and to transmit.such funds to the respective pay- maa ers of the eh?tts.- The paymaster then assumed the responsi- bility of payment at the-. shafts. He was also, responsible for balancing the invoices, of oreditor firms, 8. The Hauptbuohhaltung, or Main Bookkeeping Offioe,was responsible for computing the pay of the workers and employees, which, was figured out by each shaft bookkeeper aooording to the number of workdays spent in the shaft. The shaft bookkeeper received this data from the shaft clerk and the roster keeper. Sehachte c~r'shaft Because each object was comprised of up to 18 shafts, it was necessary to have one Soviet and one German shaft manager. The German shaft. manager was responsible for the overall run of the shaft with regard to both technical and administrative matters. He and the.Soviet shaft manager also had the task of guiding the master miner (Steiger) and all other underground and above-the-ground personnel connected with the shaft. Materialverwaltung, or Supply Headquarters, was responsible for the equipping and administration of shafts and sections It supplied all types of material in order to reedy underproduction caused by lack of supply. This supply headquarters was further responsible for. maintaining a certain amount of material in reserve and for supervising the shipment of such reserves to various shafts. 11. The Fahrbereitschaft, or Motor Pool Section, was the technical section responsible for the vehicles of the various objects and had at. its disposal a large motor pool., spare parts, and repair shops. It was also responsible for the transportation of material and workers to andfrom the place of work. :12. Objektparteileitung,or Political Object Leader's Department, was Wismut's Party unit of the SED. It consisted of two or three executive party functionaries whose task was to influence the workers in the spirit along Soviet and German Party lines in order to strengthen the party; it also took radical steps against any subversive elements. These Party units were held together by the regional Party administration in Wistaut A.G. Headquarters. 13. Sioherheitsinspektor, or Safety Inspector, was responsible. to both German and Soviet courts for work accidents. With the shaft doctor, the safety inspector was responsible for the sanitation of workers, the first-aid station, and the sanitation of the shafts. One medic always accompanied the shaft doctor and the Safety Inspector on their inspecting tours. 3.4. Wisaut Handel, or Business Department, was a trade organization managed by Wismut; it was not under the control of the government. Wismut had its own restaurants, stores, and other trade Outlets where only Wismut employees were allowed to trade for Wismut coupons, textile and bonus coupons.
