Land Based Border Guards
1, at . i$ Batumi, Leningrad, and
xlaipeda, Lithuanian SSR, both land-based border,
50X1 guard officers and EM aboard shipsand in the port area. Usually, a
50X1 contingent of border guard personnel boarded SOVROMTRANSPORT vessels
when they arrived in Soviet ports. These officers and EM made a
search of the vessels and checked personal identification documents.1
2. The border guard officers' uniforms had very dark blue, or black,
trousers with red piping on the seams, an olive-green tunic,
shoulder boards with a dark olive-green baokground, darker green
stripes and piping, a service cap with an olive-green top, and pos-
sibly a red hat band and red piping on the crown. On holidays or
dress occasions, shoulder boardS wIth a gold background were worn.
These border guard personnel were armed with pistols.
EM wore olive-green trousers, tunic, overseas-type cap, and high
black boots. Their shoulder boards had a dark green background with
red stripes. Collar and overcoat flashes for both officers and EM were
green. The EM who boarded vessels in the port as part of the search
party did not carry any weapons but the Un posted aboard the ship as
guards; carried the PPSh SMG ("balalarka"). EM posted on the docks
carried PPSh SMGe or rifles.

sonnel consisted of ultramarine-gray trousers, a jumper with a light

At Leningrad in 1953, at Poti in fall 1953, and at Batumi in spring
1953, gray, wooden-hulled patrol boats, 8 to 10 in

were manned by six to eight men who wore the uniform of the maritime
border guards.

7. The uniform worn by officers on these craft consisted of dark blue
trousers, blouse, and service cap. They also wore shoulder boards
with a gold background, black stripes,and piping, and had gold stripes

9. In the former Salvmar (Salvage Maritime) area of the port of Constanta,
three or four harbor craft,of the type described in paragraph 5, were
operated by Soviet personnel.
10. The officers on these craft wore dark blue trousers without piping on
the seams, dark blue jackets, shoulder boards with a gold background,
black stripes and piping, and service caps with a white crown and black
band.
11. EM wore gray jumpenswith cobalt-blue collar flaps, gray trousers, no

hanging ribbons. Cyrillic latterirg,in gold, appeared on the band of the
cap. EM wore their rank insignia on the left sleeve above the elbow

The only activities of the patrol boats occurred
in 1952 when the patrol boats served as !, escortsto a Soviet Navy.(?)
minesweeper which operated outside of Constanta harbor. In 1953, the
patrol boats were entering and leaving Constanta harbor. One
boat was always away from the dock and it was on
duty outside of the port area.
These patrol boats displayed a flag, rectangular in shape, and divided
into two wide, lengthwise stripes. The upper section, two-thirds of the
entire width, had a white background with a hammer and sickle on the
top left corner near the staff. The lower section was ultramarine.
