The regiment had had one cadre battalion of about 150 officers and 70 EM and one infantry battalion Both of these had been deactivated under orders from the Ministry of National Defense issued about October 1953. At that time, the two heavy tank battalions had been reduced from four platoons and four tanks per company to their present strength. Prior to the deactivation of these two battalions and the reduction of the strength of the heavy tank battalion, the regimental strength had been about 400 officers and 2,400 EM, 3. In November and December of each year, the regiment activated a temporary composite recruit battalion. During the 1953 -.54 year, this battalion consisted of about six officers and 700 recruits,1 When recruits had completed their basic training and taken the oath of service in January or February, the batallion was deactivated. The recruits were then reassigned to various regimental units for further training or sent to various EM schools for training as tank drivers, mechanics, signalmen, QM specialists, and infantrymen. Such training usually lasted from six to eight months. Afterwards the men were returned to the regiment as replacements for EM about to be demobilized, reng#th and Organi z a? tiioon (See page 4 ) 4. Officers' strengths shown in various units on the chart included many warrant officers. Crew-served weapons of this unit were as follows: 24 JS-2 heavy tanks with 122 - mm guns, distributed as follows: 1 Regt C 0 1 Regt Exec Off 1 Bn CO 7 per company (three C0'1s), distributed two per platoon 23 122 - mm SP guns, M1943 on SSU - 122, distributed as follows: 1 Bn CO 1 Bn Exec Off 1 Company CO 6 per company, distributed two per platoon An unknown number of 57 - mm guns, vehicle - towed, was assigned to the AAA Battery. Staff Sections (See page 5 ) 5. certain staff sections worked under certain deputies, such as the technical service and POL supply section under the technical deputy. The heavy tank battalion was believed to have an unknown number of J5-2 heavy tanks with 122 - mm guns. The medium tank battalion of the same regiment had an unknown number of T34/85 tanks. 9. the organizational structure and strength of the Medium Tk~Bn was similar to that of the Medium Tk Bn, 39th Mecz Inf Regt. (See page 10 for latter). The Medium Tk Bn9 39th Mecz Inf Refit (See page 10) 101, The Medium Tank Battalion of the 39th Mecz Inf Regt was located at Trzebiatow-nad--Rega (Treptow an der Rega N 54-049 E 15-16), and 1900 EM. 11.
