THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
Construction of a dam on the Drava River (for location, see
sketch on page 3) was nearly finished in summer 1954. Only
final details of its construction were being completed at
that time. Construction of a power station on the dam also
appeared to be completed. The dammed area was filling up
with water; only one more meter of depth was required to
bring the water to the specified level. The dam and ba.ck-

naa b en incorrect. As a result, the water backed up across
the border and extended about five kilometers into Polish
territory. This situation caused dissension between Poland
and Czechoslovakia. The Poles were insisting upon high
monetary compensation. In addition, they wanted the water
level to be lowered enough to clear the Polish territory
or, as an alternative, large supplies of electric current
to be furnished by Czechoslovakia.

Road from Tvrdosin (N 49-20, E 19-34) to Namestovo (N 49-24,
E 19-30). The section of road between the bridge across the
Orava River (point 12) and the Namestovo community which followed
the right bank of the river was new. The old road followed the
left bank of the river and went through Ustie nad Oravou (N 49-33,
E 19-34). The section of the road between Ustie nad Oravou and
Namestovo was inundated by backwater.

construction of the dam.
