During the first three days of the exercise, at which time the oppos- ing forces were supposedly some distance away and slowly approaching their positions company selected, dug, and camouflaged. tree- 25X1 ches and gun emplacements, and parked and camouflaged the vehicles .in a nearby wooded area. During the hours of darkness, both formes sent out combat and reconnaissance patrols and often attempted to cap- ture prisoners. Blackouts were practid during the hours of darkness. On the fifth day company withdrew from their defensive 25X1 positions on orders and used vehicles to move and occupy previously selected and prepared positions several kilometers to their rear. On the sixth day, the enemy utilized about 25 PAP planes,which were described as single-engine fighters and twin-engine bombers, an.d.sim- ulated an air attack by dropping powder-filled bags on the defending troops. 7. The seventh day was used to withdraw the troops to their.bivoua? areas. All the officers ,I criti ue which generally all troops n- e railed to a vance properly and to use camouflage effectiv.ely;: they had also fre, ntly. exposed themselves to the enemy. In. addition, an unknown number of troops from the 39th Meat Inf nawciiy e reated during the enemy's tank assault on their iti pos ons. Some troops had used empty cartridges as pellets when fir- ing blank ammunition and had injured some of the troops during assaults.
