In accordance with Czechoslovak law, every male citizen must register, .a with the nearest district military headquarters, OVV - Okresni vo enske velitelstvi)in the year he becomes 18 years old.. 50X1 who was 18 years old at that time, received a regi.stereu letter from the Prerov (N 49-27, E 17-27) OVV. The letter instructed 50X1 him to appear at the Sokolovna Restaurant in Prerov to register for compulsory military service which would..start in October 1955. He. was further instructed to bring his OP -`~tb'cansky prukaz - Identity Card, as well as the summons. 2. On the appointed day (not remembered by source) source went to the Sokolovna Restaurant in Prerov, the,place designated by the OVV for the medical examinations and interviews :re.Fistration. Medical Examination .According to source, about %O young men, all 18 years of age, were present at the restaurant for registration. A soldier asked about five of them into another room where they undressed except for their shorts. eachr.eceived a small bottle with his name on it for a urine s,mple.f1A4?civilian doctor took them one by one into an adjioining room. There, the prospective soldiers appeared before a board of examiners. This board consisted of: an army officer (rank not remembered), a uniformed SNB officer. Source was also asked about past sicknesses. After the medical examination was completed, source was allowed to put on his shorts. Then he was interviewed by the military, the SNB, and the civilian members of the board. He was asked about his schooling, driving record, and about his CSM - Czechoslovak Youth Organization-activities. He was further asked about the branch of service in which he would prefer to serve. After the examination was completed, the military member of the board distributed among the future soldiers their draft cards - Prukaz brance., He also distributed application forms for the SVAZARM - Union for Cooperation with the Arr, stating that one must join some section of this organization. The forms were filled out immediately and returned to the military member ofthe board. 50X1 1954, source had to report to the 0VV in Uhersky Brod (N 43-02, E.17-39), for a preliminary physical examination 50X1 s ungs were -rayed, he was inoculated against tuberculosis and ordered to return in four days for a check-up. The check-up ~r revealed that the spot. where he had received the injection was inflamed, which indicated that his system contained TB resisting antibodies. Source was informed that he was h sic lly qualified and would start his compulsory military service 50X1. mental diseases or those hav3.ng visible physical disabilities, such as the loss of a limb, blindness, etc. Up to May 1954, men who were studying at various institutions of higher learning and who were qualified for military service were given a deferment until they finished their studies. These students had to appear before a board which examined their scholastic records as well, as their physical fitness. In cases where the scholastic record was poor, the deferment could be rejected. Men who were indispensible in their jobs also received deferments.
