On the first floor of the East-'West wing was the 41st Hv Tk-SP Regt Club, includ- ing a hall of approximately 400-man capacity. On the second floor was a library and the Marx-Lenin Reading Room. The north-south wing contained the gymnasium. 2 and 3. Barrackss 2-story brick bldgs. These were barracks for sergeants and EM of the 61st Tk Regt, 4. Barracks and Mess Halls a 2-story brick bldg. The east-west wing served as barracks and headquarters for the Div Signal Bn. On the first floor of the north-south wing was a mess hall for the Signal Bn. On the second floor was a messhall for the Recon Bn. The attic was used for storage space. 5. School, Barracks and Dispenparys a 2-story brick bldg. The first floor contained the dispervry, headquarters and classrooms for the Div Motor Transport School The second and third floors contained barracks space. 6. Barracks: A 2-story brick bldg. This barracks was occupied by the 81st Hy Tk-SP Regt. 7. Dispensary and Barracks: a 2-story brick bldg. On the first floor was a dispensary serving the 41st Hv Tk-SP Regt. The second floor and the attic were barracks for therents personnel. 8. Officer's Mess and Div Hospitals a 2-story brick bldg. In section A was the officers, mess serving the 8Ist Hv Tk_SP and the 61st Tk Regt. On the first floor were the buffet and kitchen. On the second floor was the dining room. The mess was run by personnel of the 81st Hv Tk-SP Regt. In section B was the Division Hospital (capacity unknown))including a dining room and kitchen. 9. Club and Mess Halls a 2-story brick bldg. The first floor was a mess hall serving the 37th Tk Tng Bn. Regimental Headquarters Bldg: a 2-8tory brick bldg. It served as headquarters for the 81st Hv Tk-SP Regt. 15. BOQs A 2-story brick bldg. It served as quarters for officers and civilian employees and also as billets for 50 EW assigned to the 10th Gds Tk 16. Division Headquarters: a:.2,-story brick bldg. Section a served as _ headquarters for the 10th Gds Tk Div. Section b was as follows. The first floor served as headquarters of the 37tkTk Tng Bn._ The base- ment was a warehouse for clothing and rations. The attic served as a recreation area and contained a radio-phonograph set. The remainder of section b served as a barracks for personnel ofthe,battalim headquarters section. 17. Division 0fficer4s Clubs a 2-story brick bldg. The first floor con- tained a hall for movies and lectures with a seating capacity of approximately 600 people, a buffet, a Bttliard room with ping-pong tables and a Lenin room. The patio area could be used as a dance _platform. The second floortastained separate rooms for various recreations. Both officers and reenlistees Could use the clUbrfacil- ities9 which were run by an unidentified mi or of the 10th Gds Tk Div utilizing Eli and German personnel. 18. KPP (control point) s a 1-story brick bldg. It served as a main con- trol point and contained a guard house for officers, an, coo room and a fire station. Guard house details rotated among all battalions of the division. The fire station garaged one GAZ lt ton truck staffed by 11 soldiers who rationed and lived with the division motor trans- port company. 19 thru 23. School and Family Quarterss five 2-story brick bldgs surrounded by a wooden fence two meters in height, Bldg # 20 served as a dependent school (1st to 5th grade pupils) and was staffed by officers' wives serving as teachers. The total number of students was unknown to Source. Other building's in the area serve as family quarters, chiefly for platoon leaders and company COs. The area of bldgs 199 209 21 and 22 was formerly occupied by the 62d Tk Regt until this regiment moved to POTSDAM in September or October 1953. 24. Headquartbrs and Utility Bldgs a 2-story brick bldg. It served the Motor Transport School of the division and contained the headquarters of the Motor Transport School, a supply room, classrooms, -enema and weapons cleaning room and a storeroom for soiled, greasy clothing. This bldg was formerly occupied by the unidentified howitzer regiment. 25. Mess Halls a 2-story brick bldg. It served as the mess for sergeants and EM of the 61st Gds Tk Regt. 26, Mess Halls a 2-story brick bldg. It housed mess halls for the Motor Transport School of the division. The first floor was the EM mess hall. The secohd floor was the mess hall for officers of the Motor Transport School Ahd the 37th Tk Tng Bn, 27. Barracks. a 2-story undbmaged brick bldg. Repair Shops: a 1-story brick bldg. It housed BTRM (repair facili- ties) for the division. Its shops included machine and welding equipment, hoists and a battery recharging station. 29. 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt Hq, Barracks, PX, Dispensary. and a School: Section a of this bldg was a 2-story brick section serving as barr- acks for the tank battalion of the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt. Section bp.EL2-story brick section, was as follows, The first floor served as a small PX or Store (Magazin) which was serviced by ufficers' wives. The second floor served as a storeroom for the PX. Section 0, of 3 stories and of brickawas as follows. The first floor was headquarters for the 29th Mtrzd Aifle Regt._ The,second_floor housed the dispensary of the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt. Section d, of 2 stories, served as a school for the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt, 30. Divisional Guard House: a 1-story brick bldg containing 28 cells and one guard room. 31. Stadium, This was surrounded by a wooden fence 1.20 m high. Gates were located at the east and northeast sides. Permanent bleachers completely surrounded the playing field, which also contained track 50X1 and soccer facilities. 32. Heating Plant: a 1-story red brick bldg staffed by 18 EM and one sergeant from an unknown unit. The bldg contained space for billet- ing the above personnel. The plant supplied heat for the entire caserne. 2. Area "B" 1. ,44hicle and Veapons'Parks a 1-story brick bldg. This bldg contained approximately 30 doors and served as a vehicle park for machines of the Recon Co, AAA Btry, Transport Co, BTRM CO (Broniye Tankovaya Remont naya Masterskaya Rota - Armor-Tank Repair Co.), and Housekeep- ing Platoon of the 81st Hv Tkr,SP Regt. 50X1 4 mm and 85 mm AAA (814):weapenaparked (quantities unknown). 50X1 The bldg was formerly used as horse stables. Section a of this bldg was partially destroyed. To date no effort has been made to repair this section. 2. Gasoline Pumps: a and b were gasoline, civilian type, stationery pumps supplied by underground storage tanks of unknown capacity. C was a wooden booth for the service man. D was a small wooden shed for storage of lubricants. Refueling facilities supplied vehicles of the units listed in #1 only. 3. KTP (Equipment Control Point): was a small wooden bldg serving as the control point for vehicles entering the park area. It was staff- ed by one officer in charge of the park area, one career NCO and three conscript EM (relieving each other in shifts). Section b was a guard booth staffed by one soldier armed with a SMG. (Items 2 and 3 were surrounded by a Zr-strand barbed wire fence two meters in height;) 4. Vehicle and Weapons Parks a 1-story brick bldg. Approximately 30 doors provided separate garage facilities for an estimated 60 tanks. This bldg was well guarded day and night. It was formerly used as a horse stable0 It served the 81st Hy Tk-SP Regt. Park and Repair Shops s a 1-story brick bldg with a multi.-door front, fbrmerly used as a horse stable. Section a housed the BTRM (repair) company of the 81st By Tk-SP Regt. Repair facilities4ncluded a machine shop and a battery charging station. Facilities included one 50X1 grease pit. Section b was a tank park, three unidentified stripped heavy tanks, two of which were basic prime-movers and one of which' was equipped with hoisting gear for upe 14 salvage operations. 6. POL Area ,surrounded by a barbed wire, guarded fence. All structures in the area were wooden. This was the POL area of the 81st By Tk-SP Regt, 7, Gasoline Pumps, of conventional civiliam design. They were supplied by underground tanks of unknown capacity, 8. POL Storage Points a small wooden shack used as a warehouse for various lubricants, One EM handled their distribution. 9. Guard Booths a small wooden booth operated by one officer (OIC of POL area) and three EM. 10. Guard Booths a small, one-man wooden booth. a. KTP (equipment Control point) s a small wooden shack occupied by one career NCO who supervised POL distribution and checked the condition of vehicles. 11. Warehouse Shacks a small wooden structure used for storage of various lubricants. 12. KTP (Divisional equipment control point) s a small wooden structure staffed by one ?Meer and three conscript EM. The officer was a specialist responsible for quickly cheekingall equipment as it left the area. Normal rank -- 1st Lt (tankist). 13. Division Auto-Armor-Technical Equipient Supply Warehouse (ABTI) (Auto-Brohyo-Tekhniokoyelmnshchestvo)s et,, 1-story brick bldg which served as a storage place for parts to all ordnance equipment. The warehouse was dWded into stalls according to unidentified Vehicle and weapon port types. One career NCQ' and one EM handled the latterus distribution. 14. Chemical Warehouses a 1-story brick bldg. This held division stor- age facilities for the following types of chemical equipments uniden- tified protective clothing and unidentified gas masks. 15. Warehouses A 1-story brick bldg which housed division ( C & E ) storage facilities. NO further information. 16. Vehicle Parks an undamaged 1-story brick bldg. Section a vehicle park for the division reconnaissance battalion. 50X1 an unknown quantity of unidentified motorcycles, armored cars and 30MIFI (amphibious tanks) parked here. Section b served as a park for vehicles of the division signal battalion and also had a training 50X1 area. Section c served as a park for the mortar and rocket launcher battalion (Gvardeyskiy Minomyetniy Batalyon), unknown quantity of what he estimated as 85 mm and 120 mm mortars parked here. This section also included an artillery repair shop. 16d was a latrines a temporary, movable, wooden structure set up for divisional use. Repair Shops a 1-story brick bldg which served as the central auto repair shop for wheeled vehicles of the division. Facilities in- clude overhead hoists, six grease pits capable of servicing 12 vehicles simultaneously9 a parts section, a battery charging station and a machine shop. The officer in charge was normally a field grade officer from an unidentified divisional unit. Personnel from the motor transport company worked in this bldg. 18. An unknown 1-story brick bldg. 19. An unknown 1-story brick bldg. 20. Caserne Bath Houses a 1-story brick bldg. Its basement contained facilities for the heating of water. The bath house had a capacity of 80 men. Units utilized the bath house according to a schedule. Normally 15 minutes were allowed per company. 2/. An unknown 1-story brick bldg. 22. An unknown 1-story brick bldg. 23. Motor Parks an undamaged 1-story brick bldg,which probably served as a vehicle park for the division motor transport company. 24, Motor Parks a 1-story brick bldg. This was small and was used for command vehicles. It contained one Pobeda. auto,and seven GAZ 692s. Twoun?dentified busevof approximately 30 seat capacity. (used by the division CO and the Political Officer) and one 7iadio dar,were parked there and .ware used for special activities such as hauling visiting teams. 25. Club, Sports Hall9 Mess and Parks a 1-story brick bldg. Section a was the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Club, The Clubos hall had a seating capa- city of 29000 and was used for movies9 lectures and concerts. Section b housed a sports hall containing facilities formursuing various sports. Section c was a mess hall of 19500 man capacity and serving the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt. The career NCO mess was in a separate room. Section d was the park of the AAA Battery9 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt. 26. Ammunition Storage Dugouts one of several dugouts in the area servic- ing nine unidentified AA meapons in firing position nearby. Dugouts and weapons' were surrounded by a wooden fence one meter high. The guns belonged to the AAA Btry of the 29th Mtrzd Rifle Regt. The area was closely guarded at night by three soldiers who were also respon- sible for alerting gun crews during times of emergencies. 26a was a swimming pool for caserne personnel. , 27 thru 41s This was presumed to be the park area for the 29th 50X1 Mtrzd Rifle Regt, the 61st Tk Regt, the 37th Tk Tng Bn and/or the division motor transport company. The buildings were each 1 story high and had multi-door frontage suggesting garage facilities. 42. Headquarters and PXs a 2-tory brick bldg6 The first floor was a PX serviced by 10 Germans supervised by onese0006ified divisional offider. The second floor was the division BTRM (repair) headquar- ters. Classrooms occupied the remaining space. 3. Area D 50X1 ? 14, Division Bakery: a 1-story brick bldg built in 1952. It was serviced by 37 conscript EM of the unidentified housekeeping element of the division. The EM were specially trained in baking. Baking facili- ties were primitive, consisting of six large, coal fed ovens. The 50X1 bakery supplied the entire 10th Div with bread (total output unknown). Mho area was frequently visited to obtain bread for 50X1 the 62d Tk Regt. An unidentified POTSDAM Komendatura drew read from this bakery. 50X1 2. Tank Training Sheds a 1-story wooden shed capable of holding three tanks and one armored car for dry firing training. It contained special platforms:for jockeying tanks and armored cars which were simulating tank motion. It was under 24-hour guard. It served the 81st Hv Tk-SP Regt. 3. Training Sheds , a 1-story wooden shed used for training on the com- ponent parts of tanks, such as the machine gun and sight. It served the 61st Tk Regt. 4. Tank Training Sheds same as that described in #2. It served the 61st Tk Regt, 5. Tank Training Sheds same. as #2 above._ It served the 37th Tk Tng Bn. 6, Training Shed: same as #3 above. It served_the,81st Hv Tk-SP Regt. 7 thru 10. Small miniature ranges, used in connection with bldgs 2 through 5 for tank dry firing training.: It had pull-type targets. 5. Area E This was the dependent housing area housing approximately lop_ families of caserne unit officers of field-grade rank. Thip_areawas surrounded by a wooden fence two meters in height topped by a 3-strand barbed wire barrier. The bldgs were all of 2-story brick construction. This area also had VIP quarters (item 1) housing the division CO, the division political officer and the division Chief of Staff. This blinding was guarded from 2100 hours to 0600 hours. The caserne was bound by a two-meter-high wrought-iron fence along the road running northeast in the direction of KRAMPHTZ and, along the road running east 50X1 in the direction of POTSDAM. The first floor was used as a barracks and guard room for the AAA Regiment. The second floor housed peraonnel of the AAA Regiment (total capacity unknown). 3. Howitzer Regiment Barraokes a 2-story brick bldg. The first floor con- tained barracks space for the howitzer regiment personnel, a classroom for an unidentified regimental school and a guard room for the howitzer regiment. The second story contained barracks space for the howitzer ? regiment personnel, axle unidentified AAA Regimental School classroomjend 50X1 supply rooms for equipment used in regimental schools.1? some type of signal training was given in 50X1 the unidentified regimental schools. He was unable to give any indication as to the type of equipment used in them.) 4. Sports Buildings a 2-story brick bldg containing a gymnasium, indoor swimming pool and baths. This building was used by all personnel of the canerne. , Headquarters Buildings a 3-story brick building. The first floor housed headquarters personnel of the unidentified howitzer regiment. The second floor housed headquarters personnel of the 62d Gds Tk Regt. The third floor housed .headquarters personnel of the unidentified AAA Regt. The basement contained a PX staffed by two Soviet female civilian employees, a military telephone exchange and an unidentified radio receiver and transmitter serviced by signal personnelof the 62d Gds Tk Regt. The roof of the bldg had a lookout booth containing a siren and was manned by one EM 24 hourse.day. A bugle and an unidentified tele- phone were also in the booth. The L-shaped portion of this bldg contained a dispensary staffed by medical personnel of an unidentified AAA Regiment. This building also contained a rations storerou* for the 62d Gds Tk Regt mess hall. Dispensary of 62d Gds Tk Regt s a 2-story brick bldg serviced by the regiments medical battalion0 this dispensary had approxi- mately a 35-bed capacity. Caserne Clubs a 3-story bldg housing an auditorium with an estimated seating capacity of approximately 850 persons0 however, all three regiments in the Caserne were assembled (standing up) in this auditorium on several occasions. This building also contained the Marx-Lenin Room, a game room, separate libraries for each regiment, a radio center with a civilian radio and record playnand broadcasting equipm nt for internal building loudspeakers only. The building also contained classrooms. Movies were held twice weekly in this club, which was open to all personnel of the Caserne. Barracks s a 3-story brick bldg, total capacity unknown. The first floor was occupied by unidentified howitzer regiment personnel. The other two floors wer equipped with beds to accommodate unidentified visiting athletes from units of the Seventh Army. Barracks of 62d Gds Tk Regt s a 3-story brick bldg with a capacity of approximately 400 spaces. In addition to barracks space for personnel of the regiment the bldg contained the followings The first floor con tamed the 1st Bn Hq and let and 2d Co Hq and supply rooms. The second floor contained the 2d Bn Headquarters and 1st and 2d Co Hq and supply rooms. The third floor contained thp 3d Bn Headquarters and 1st and 2d qo flq and supply rooms. This floor elso contained company headquarters for the regimental signal company and barracks space for the troop complement. The basement of this bldg contained a chemical warehouse for the 62d Gds Tk Regt, containing unidentified protective clothing, gas masks and tankers uniformseue. 13. Mess Hal] t and Dispensary (unidentified Howitzer Regiment )s a 3-story brick bldg. The first floor contained a consolidatedmess hall for the howitzer regiment. The second floor contained a dispensary serviced by the howitzer regiment medical personnel. The third floor was used asa storeroom for kitchen supplies. The basement was utilized as a.ration, storeroom. 14. Officers' Quarters (BO) s a 3-story bldg of unknown capacity housing bachelor Oficers of all three reg nts (Tk, howitzer and AAA) as well as unidentified civilian employees ahd three Dr. a. KTP (Kontrolno-Tekhnicheskiy Punkt)s a dispatch shack for tanks and vehicles of the 62d Gds Tk lee? It was serviced by personnel of this regiOnt. The basement of this building contained the 62d Regiment guardhouse. 16. Vehicle Garages and Shop Area for AAA Regiments a 1-story brick bldg containing the following facilities for the AAA regiments battery charging station9 machine shop and water heating point. The open area in front of 169 16a, and 16b was used as a training area for the AAA Regiment. The area had cable strung upon which targets were moved for dry firing of AAA weapons. a. Gymnasiums a 2-story brick bldg containing a gymnasium and used by all members of the Caserne. b. Weapons and Vehicle Park of the AAA Regiments a 1-story brick bldg containing unidentified AA and presumably AT weapons. 50X1 weapons of unidentified caliber (2 different sizes) were on both two-wheeled and four wheeled mounts. It contained a tank service section, battery charging station, a machine and electrical shop and the artillery repair shop for the 62d Gds Tk Regt. 20, Grease Pits a 1-story bldg containing an enclosed grease pit. This builOing was used by the motor transport company of the 62d Gds Tk Regt for servicing organic regimental vehicles. 21. Tank Parks a 1-story brick bldg with approximately 15 sets of doors. This building was used to accommodate 30 tanks of the let Bn9 62d Gds Tk Regt. Source stated that four amphibious tanks of the regiment were temporarily stored here in the fall of 1954 for seven days. Then they moved to an unidentified building in the items 30 to 40 series. Service Buildings a 1-story wooden building used by personnel as a washroom and smoking ar a. 28 & 29. Assembly Areas 4? open areas used by the let and 2d Bns, 62d Gds Tk Regt for training and alerts. 30 thru 37. Vehicle Sheds. These seven sheds were identical 1-story buildings with concrete floors, wooden sides and wood and tarpaper roofs. The buildings had open ends. Sheds 30 and 31 contained unidentified GAZ and ZIS trucks of the Motor Transport Co, 62d Gds Tk Regt, Sheds 32 and 33 contained three tank recovery vehicles (stripped T/34 tanks), unidentified vehicles, five ZIS 150's, one GAZ 63, one mobile kitchen trailer, a mobile repair shop on ZIS chassis and all equipment organic to the BTRM of the 62d Gds Tk Regt., Shed 34 contained two armored personnel carriers used by the let Bn Co and one used by the Regi- mental Headquarters, four GAZ 63 trucks and one mobile kitchen trailer. All vehicles were chauffeured by EM of the Housekeeping Platoon, 62d Gds Tk Regt. Shed 35 contained three kitchen trailers, three GAZ 63 trucks, an unknown number of armored personnel carriers and three mobile repair shops on ZIS chassis. Sheds 36 and 37 contained a total of 27 tanks of the 3d Bn, 62d Gds Tk Regt., 50X1 38 and 390 thee sheds were constructed in the summer of 1955 and were identical to 30636. ? These buildings contained an unknown number of GAZ-63 trucks and of unidentified howitzers. These sheds were used by the unidentified howitzer regiment, 10th Tk Div., 40. KTP (Control Point) for howitzer regiment equipments a 1-room wooden shack staffed by three EM of the howitzer regiment. 41. POL Dumps seven semi-underground storage units used by all caserne units. Each was approximatelyeight meters long, three meters wide and two meters deep and 1.2 in above ground level. The roofs were wooden and covered with dirt. These units stored an unknown number of 200 1 barrels and 20 1 Jerry cans with POL products. An unknown number of Studebaker POL trucks generally parked in this area. In the area was a one-room shack in which worked one EM from each of the three regiments occupying the caserne.
