Pay for artillery officers in the Soviet Zone of Germany is as follows: a. Regimental Commander, a colonel: regimental commandersipay (assignment pay) - 1800 rubles co1one30 pay (rank pay) - 1300 rubles plus longevity for 2-5 years - 5% for 5-10 years - 10% for 10-15 years -15% allowance for orderly - 300 rubles Total: about 4000 'rubles The colonel gets 3200 rubles and 3200 East Marks (20% of the total pay is deducted and paid in East Marks; i e$ 20% of 4000 is 800 rubles, and 800 rubles, figured at two marks per ruble equals 1600 East Marks). I believe the extra 1600 East Marks constitutes overseas pay. Deductions from the pay are as follows: 13% income tax this income tax is 13% of ? all earnings above 1000 ? rubles per month; for those earning less than 1000 rubles per month the tax is 8% . 15-20% for war bonds officers must buy war bonds in an amount equivalent to two month's pay; in this example a minimum of 8000 rubles per year must be invested in war bonds 3% for CP dues 30 East Marks for rent 4o rubles per three-month period for newspaper and magazine subscriptions 10 East Marks per month for service in the mess hall Uniforms for officers and their meals are free, but any Items eaten wnich are not included in the menu must be paid for b. The deputy regimental commander receives 1500 rubles assignment pay, plus his rank pay, orderly allowances and longevity.. a. The battery or company political officer receives 800 rubles assignment pay plus his rank pay, allowances and longevity. f. A platoon leader receives 700 rubles assignment pay plus 'his rank pay, allowances and longevity. a lieutenant received 500 rubles rank pay, 800 ru les for assignment as battery political officer, and 65 rubles for longevity. Of the 1300 rubles total monthly 20% was deducted to be paid in East Marks; 200 rubles were deducted for bonds; 13% was deducted for income tax; 3% was deducted for party dues; /to rubles were deducted each three months for subscriptions to Pravda Krasnaya Zvezda, Stalinskaya Gvardya, Sovietskaya IFET-g: Propagandist Agitator, and Artillerist; 30 East Marks were deducted for monthly rent; and 10 East Marks were deducted for service in the messhall. 50X1 50X1 50X1 Rubles are not paid out to officers in the Soviet Zone of Germany, nor can they be drawn in East Marks; instead they are entered in special bankbooks. Thus the money can be drawn from the account when the depositor is in the USSR; he can ,transfer money to hib relatives ip the USSR from the account; or, when going on leave, the depositor can draw rubles at the USSR border. In the USSR, all married officers who have no children pay a special tax of 6% for childessness, but this tax is not levied upon officers in the Soviet Zone of Germany. 50 Officers get the following items free, for the period stated: Overcoat - two years Gabardine summer uniform - two years Trousers - one year Parade uniform - three years ? Summer uniform, issue - one year Dress boots - eight months Shelter tent - three years Service cap - two years Soap, two cakes - one month Boot soles (two pair) - one year Underwear (two sets) - one year Socks and footwraps 6.
