In front of the main :line of resistance are three full-profile
trex~ehes (Note: trenches deep enough so that an average man can
stand erect without eacposing himself), connected by communication
trenches . Tl~e second sine of defense, ~fenigen~.upnitz-Fariroda,
consists of two trenct-ifs.
Enemy arti~,lery is cond~a,eti.ng Fire as follows: in the woods near
He3.n, where a unit of :1U58?mm guns up to about battalion strength is
located; in Hastrunsfeld, where a unit of ..155-mm guns up to about
bs.ttal:i:cjn strength i:~ located. In the region of Wenigenlupnit~~
and Satclstadt the presence of up to five mortar batteries has
'b~cari established.
Enemy ai~s?eraft cif the D-~9, E?~F a.nd 8~-36 types, under the cover

ca~t~xr~~xni.~dations lanes to the rear, concentrating on the bombing of

Captured, enemy soldiers have indicated that the 65th and 11~#th
T.nf'~~nf:~~y Regirn~:nts of the 3d Inf Div and the $~th Inf Regt of the
$th Inf Div are on the d.e~r'ense in front of the enemy main line of
res~?starire. Enemy reserves are locat~d~as follows: a eon-
cex7tra.tic~n esf tanks, up to ~ a battalion in strength, in the region
o,f tYie woods near Hein.; up to a battalion of tanks and up to a
battalion of 15`a-rn;~ guns were detrained at and are located near
trie r~xi.lroad stat:Ion ixx Mechtextstedt, and a concentration of
infantry troops is in the Schona,u .region.
Aerial reconnaissance established the movement of a column of
tanks and ether vehi.~;lt s up tr.~ two km long from the region of
Eisenach.
The enemy is regrouping his units ar;d is preparing to shift to
offens~.ve action. .

2. The 57th Gds Rifle Div, with the 39th AT Brig attached, has the
mission of making a march from the Naumburg region to the Aspach
region during the night of 2$-29 December 1951, and will be ready
to shift to offense in the direction of Eisenach on 3O December 1951.
The divis~.on will execute the march in two columns, using two
routes. The right column proceeds as follows: Naumburg, Weimar,
Erfurt, Q~gtha, Aspach. It consists of the division headquarters,
the 170th 4ds Rifle Refit, the 655th How Refit, the 932d Sep AAA Bn
(two be,tteries), the 67th Sep Engr Bn, the $9th Sep Sig Bn, the
Medical Dn, and division rear services. The left column proceeds
as follows; Weissenfels, Weimar, and then by autobahn to
Chorselgei , It consists of the 174th tads Rifle Refit, the
12$th Arty Refit, the 172d 4ds Rifle Refit, the 17th HT-SP Refit,
the 64th Seep AT Bn, the gad Sep Mtrcl Ren Bn, and one battery of
the g32d Sep AAA Bn.
The division units are to observe strictly all principles of
camouflage, concealment, and the safeguarding of military security
during the , march .
The units will assemble in the following areas: .
170th (ode Rifle Refit in Aspach region, CP map coordinate 326
174th 4ds Rifle Refit in Brucheim region, CP map coordinate 32$
172d q~de Ri1Cle Refit in Chorselgei region, CP map coordinate 377
65th Hcw Refit and 12$tY~ Arty Refit in Mezbach region
g3~d Sep AAA Bn in Tugleben region, CP ma coordinate. 372
Division headquarters, 3gth Sep Sig Bn, 64th AT Bn, 17th
HT?~SP Refit, and 67th Sep Engr Bn wi11 concentrate in the
region cif the woods two km east of Meterbach
The units of the division will arive in the assembly area by
0604 hour$ on 29 December 1951. Engineer work (camouflage, en-
trenchment, OPO, etc) is to be conducted in complete compliance
with instruction manuals and is to be complete by 1200 hours on
30 December 1951 for the shift to the offensive made in the
general direction] of Eisenach.
The 170th t~da Rif 1e Refit, with two battalions of the 655th How
Refit and ono battery of the g32d Sep AAA Bn, is designated as the
advance guard for the division.
The first echelon is to consist of the 174th (ode Rifle Refit; the
second echelon, the 172d Gds Rifle Refit, will be ready to relieve
the ~.7Uth 4ds Rifle Refit in the Wut region (if the 179th has
heavy casualties).
The 39th t}dt~ Rifle Div of the 3C~VIII Rifle Corps moves on the
right,. and is concentrated in the .region of the woods near
q~rumbach. On tie left, the 21st Q~ds Mecz Div is concentrated
in the Schonau region. The 20th 4ds Mecz Div is in the region
of t~otha, ready to follow up the successes of the 57th lade Rifle
Div.
4. Th? it:>~,ediate task of the division is to break through the enemy
main line of resistance and proceed into the (~etelstadt region.
ThQ follow up task is to develop the offensive sand come out on
the eastern edge of Eisenach, where, by combined operations with
t1~e 21st t~det Mecz Div and the 39th 4ds Rifle Div, it will surround
the e,;lemy units in Eisenach and annihilate them.

5. The division rear services are to concentrate in the flotha region,
ready to eupply the units of the division with ammunition, food
and PQL during the battle,
Artil~.ery missions are as follows: artillery units will conduct
one hour of artillery preparation on the enemy main line of
resistanct, neutralize firing points and destroy fortif:~cations .
During the advance of our units, the artillery will shift its
fire to the secondary line of resistance, neutralize firing
points, and eupport the advancing divisional units with fire.
The 932d 3Cp AAA Bn will give anti-aircraft protection to the
division ur#i~e during the-march and in the assembly area, During
the period of advance one battery will give anti--aircraft cover
to 'the d~.via~.on advance guard, and two batteries will give anti-
aircrai't cover to the Main. forces,
Artillery units will obtain detailed instructions for their
movemen~e From tk#e divisional artillery chief .
The 6~tfi Sep AT Bn and the 39th AT Brig will be in my reserves
and, w~.ll operate under m, personal direction.
The 17~h ITT-SP Regt wi11 be ready to s~:zgport the rifle units with
fire and by us#,ng their weight will destroy obstacles during the
period of the advance; when the rifle units break throtggh the vain
line of res~.stance the 17th HT-~SP Regt will develop the successes
of the advance. by attacking the enem~r rear from the left flank,
The commander of the 93d Mtrc1 Rcn Bn will organize reconnaissance
of the enemy main line of resistance and enemy defenses in depth,
and w~.ll report his findings to me.
The commander of the 67th Sep Engr Bn is to ensure passage through
tae barbed wire entang~.ements~ and mine fields, and must prepare
bridges-over tank pits. Lastly he is charged with being ready
to o~g~inize the crossing of the 4derra River for
the division.

1. The battalion, composed of the headquarters. and three batteries,
occupies baitle positions one km north of Naumburg and has the
mission of protecting units of the division from. enemy aircraft.
~. The battalion did not fire during 22 .July 1951. No ammunition was
used. T9ur3,ng the day 50 aircraft sorties by the enemy were
recorded.

Plan for the ~t~plementation of a. Combat Alarm of the 9324 Separate
Antiaircraft Battalion f'or 1951.
I. Natification
a . The battalion . may be notified of a combat alarm by the
division commander, or the chief of staff of the division,
or 'by staff offic~;rs who have signed permission from the
div~,sion commander.
b. The combat alarm may be announced by telephone or radio,
and also 'by a liaison officer, who notifies the officer of
the day ,
c . After receiving the combat alarm, the officer of the da`y
alerts all the personnel, notifies the unit commander and
chief of staff by messengers, and personally directs the
assembly of x~ersonnel until. the unit officers arrive. Re
also strengthens the guard in the vehicle and ,gun parks
and at supply x~oints, directs camouflage activities and
.maintains order.
d. The unit comm:~.nd~~r, upon arrival at his s~eed.quarters,
assigns m.issic~ns tU the officer personnel for the move to
the assembly area, by all units, aazd then, ~t~;rough his staff

non-egms . Thc: a.rt;illery pieces are moved out, vehicle
engines are s~;az?tc,d, artillery pieces are hooked to the
vehicles, and. t;he equipment and ammurit:ton are loaded.
b. Officers rept~;:~t, try headquarters in full combat readiness,
with auitcase:a and reap cases, to get maps and to learn
their mission, after which they report to their units to
d.ireGt the unit assembly. When ready, the officers form
their batteries in column formation i.n the area designated
for this purp~~~~e with the heads or" the columns facing
the control cricckpoint, and report to the Unit commander. or
the chief of st:af'f' that they are ready to move .
The c#~ief of :~.rt:illery, with his personnel sand five other EM,
proceeds to the artillery supply point with a truck to
receive ammunition.
Tie supp7_y officer, with five EM, supervises the loading cf
tie emergency rations on supply trucks and teen ,joins the
main column.
The senior bat~;,al.ion technical officer loads tY~e POL from
the emergency supplies into his truck and ,joins the column.

The chief of staff Qives the orders to deactivate and load
the HQ, staff, ~;arry ;gut the flag, and to relieve the guard,
which is reduced to one man from each subordinate unit.
The order of formation of the column for the march to the
assemb~.y area is as follows : At tYae front of the column is
the .battalion staff and the headquarters platoon, with the
Xst, 2d and 3d batteries and rear services following, The
ch~.ef of staff heads the column. The march route is as
follows; base camp - Grossberingen - Wolfsberingen - Gross-
hart forest.
.c. Upon arrival at the assembly area, in case of combat alarm,
the battalion units will take up the following formations;
The 1st battery in the region of map reference 35$; the 2d
battery in the region of map .reference 37~; and the 3r3 battery
at a single house, The headquarters staff, headquarldGrs
platoons and rear services will occupy the northern edge of
Grosshart forest. The headquarters platoon wi11 immediately
esta'glish communications with the battalion unite and set up
a radio station for contact with the division artillery staff.
The battalion chief of reconnaissance will deploy the division
pommand post under the direction of the chief of staff and
will stat~.on a reconnaissance observer.
d. -The m,issian of the battalion in the assembly area. fora combat
alarm is to protect the units of the division from enemy air
attacks. Firing will commence on orders from the division CF.
Single reconnaissance aircraft will not be fired upon,
III. Anti-aircraft Det'ense Measures on the March
Battery commanders will prepare twa antiaircraft guns each to be
ready. for firj.ng an the move, while the march is in pragress.
.each gun will have one boat of ammunition. Guns will be-fired as
necessary on commar7d of the battery commander, during the march.
Air observers will be detailed for ea~:h vehicle and all around
observation will bP increased.
Signal for air threat: two green rockets
All personnel will have their gas masks and protective capes:
observers (for gas attack) will be detailed.
Signal for chemical threat: one white rocket
Observation of bath air and ground enemy forces will be maintained
at the firing points on a 24-hour .per day basis, AF shells and
Al' gr~nadee will be in readiness for a defense against enemy tanks.

When assembling personnel during the march and in the assembly areas,
all measures of camouflage are to be observed strictly, the
movement is to be made with dimmed-out vehicle lights, no fires
will be lit, and smoking is strictly prohibited, especially on
v~hiele's during the movement. The amount of time allotted for
assemb~.y, moving out and completing the move of the battalion is
one hour From the time the alarm is sounded.

Battalion, Naumburg, 2200 Hours 20%7/51, Map 150,000, 1948
1. Enemy farces, consisting of the 10th and 8th Inf Divs, are
occupying defensive positions on the western bank of the Werra
River anal are preparing to pass over to the offensive with. the
purpose of penetrating our main line of resistance and continuing
on in the direction of Eisenach.
By aerial reconnaissance it has been established that the enemy
has concentrated large tank units. Facing .the front are the 4th
Mecz Div and the 5th Tk Div. F.nemy_tanks are concentrated ire
the woods in the region of ~luta. These units are equipped with
heavy tanks. Enerriy tanks are conducting fire with AP and
incendiary rounds.
2. Subordinate .units of the battalion will have two boxes of AP
shells in readiness f?or each gun to be used for AT defense.
Fire on epemy tanks will be opened only for defense against tanks
penetrating into the zone of the firing positions.
3. A1], troops will tae issued anti-tank grenades and special personnel
for ~irir~g on tanks will be detailed from the headquarters section
and from the ammunition carriers.
~+. Observers will be detailed for abserving the enemy ground forces,
and a 24-hour observation of enemy ground forces will be het up
at the firing positians.
5. Firing positions will be completely equipped in the engineer
sense, as established in the manual. Trenches will be dug at a
distance of 200 m from the firing positions far the concealment
of the tank destroyers.
Firing data cards will be completed for each grin for conducting
defensive fire, and commanders will define firing sectors for
each gun.
Probable lanes of tank approach will be determined and indicated
to all personnel.
7. Defensive fire will be conducted as necessary in each firing
sector.
8. Signal for tank threat: two green rockets; by radio or tele-
phone the word "tanks".
g. Reports of tank danger will be announced immediately by tele-
phone and radio.
