Turnu-Severin Harbor was of military importance because
it
was used solely to construct and repair tugs and barges which
were used for the Danube traffic. However, this harbor was
of con-e..uence to the Rumanian Merchant Marine and much used
by that service0 a sketch of the Turnu-Severin
Harbor area 27ee End l (Al/ pinpointed the following
sites:
Point #1 The Only Entrance to the Harbor Area. The entrance
was guarded by militiamen armed with rifles or
pistols. Only shipyard workers, harbor employeesp
sailors and occasional passengers were admitted
through the gate. The shipyard workers had to go
directly into the shipyard area without loitering
in the harbor area.
Point #2
The Sovrem Office. ThLs single-story building was
constructed of cement-covered brick, and had a low
hipped, tile covered roof. It measured approximately
twelve by eight meters. This building was equipped
with a radio transmitter and had four or five offices.
The following sections were in the Sovrom office
building: the Sovrom representative's section, the
materials section, registry section and the radio
section. The Sovrom representative who was also
in -charge of political affairs was a Rumanian
(name unknown). This building was not guarded.

45 The Customs Office. This blinding was constructed Of
brick, was a single-story sitructure'and had a hipped
tile, covered roof. It measured approximately 12 by
eight and was located about four m distance from
Point #2. Besides the customs office, the office of
the Chief of Harbor ,Militia Was probably located there.
#4 Double Track Normal Gauge Rail Line. This track crossed
Point #1 at ground. level. The railroad station, not
shown on this sketch, was located west of the street of
Pdlint #1.
The: Harbor Master's Office. This. building Also, contained:
the supply, finance and personnel sections of the'Sovrom'
transport company. It was constructed'and had the same
dimensionslas the building mentioned in Point #21above,
This building was located about two m from Point #3.
#6 Fence. This fence was a wooden board fence about 1.5 m
high. It probably surrounded the whole harbor area.
Street This street was surfaced with granite stone',
about four in wide, and was in good condition.

#8 Park Area. It extended across the street of Point #1
westward and northward to the outskirts of the town.
The distance between the southern border of this park and
the fence at, Point #6, was approximately eight m. The
width of the park area (morth - south direction) was
about 200 m.
#9 The SDGP Transport Company Office, The SDGP is a Soviet
water transport company. The SDGP office building was
constructed of Cement-covered brick, was a single story
structure, and had a gabled, tile-covered roof. It,
measured approximately 14 by six in. The distance between
this building and the building at Point #5 was approxi-

#10 Storage Building. This building served as a storage
space for material (not freight) used by the SDGP. The
building was of the same construction, appearance and
size as the building Mentioned in Point #9.

Rail Track. This was a single track normal gauge rail
line spur, extending from the rail line, Point #4 in
the harbor area.
The Sovrom Shipyard. This area extended about 40m
north - south and 200 m east?. weist. Construction
and repair of Danube tu s and barges were undertaken at
this shipyard. this installation operated
24 hours a day and 3 000 to 4 000 people were
employed there. the manager of this
installation was a Russian name unknown). There was a
wooden board fence, approximately two to two and one half
m high along the eastern side of the shipyard area. The
gate, located in front Of the building at Point #12A,
was guarded by a shipyard guard, who possessed no visible
weapons.

.#12A Building. This building was constructed of brick, and had
a sheet metal roof. The building extended about 10 in in
a north south direction. It probably contained offices.

#13. iTwo Repair Barges'. These two barges were tied at the
quay near the shipyard. They were equipped with repair
? facilities for vessels (details unknown).
#14 Frontier Troops Office Building. This building was
? ,conStructed of cement-Covered brick, was a single-story
structure and had a sheet metal roof (gabled). It
.measured approximately eight by six in. Frontier troops
guarded the harbor area.
#15, Two Pontoons. The pontoons were of metal construction And
-hAd Wooden decks. They served for embarkation and debarka-
tion of personnel.
#16 Harbor Sanitary Service Building. This building was-con-
structed'the same as that building mentioned' in Point #14.
:The: area between building Point #14 and #161 approximately
six by, six in,. was cement surfaced and had a sheet metal
rOpf. There were no walls on the northern and southern
sides.
#31' The gua. It was of granite stone construction, and about
_eight in wide, extending about 100 m eastwards from the
?shipyard's area, Point #12 The quay was approximately
,three m'above'water level (depth of the river along the
quay unknown).
41:3 Storage Building. This building Was constructed of cement-
covered briok, was A single story structure and had a
gabled,' tile covered roof. It measured About 14 by six in.
This building,WaS.used by Sovrom for storage Of equipment,
such as signal lights, cables, Accumulators and distilled
Water.. : ?
#19 Storage Building. This building was of the same construc-
tion as the building mentioned in Point #18 and was used
. by'Soyrom for the mite purpose.
The area -between the street at Point #7 and the quay at Point #17 was
surfaced with granite stone. One row of trees extended along the
.middle of.thisiarea in an east ,_west-direetion. .The harbor area,
located on the.southern:outskirts of Turnu-Severin, extended eastWard.
and westward from the harbor center.
