As far as I know3 in the USSR kyanites never occur in isolation and are never
considered -separately from the minerals of this group - the polymorphic modifi-
cations of the 412038102 compounds (andalusite, sillimanite and mullite). All
of them are often found together, and all of them are used, even though it be in
very small amounts, as alumina high refractories (glinozemnyye vysokoogneupory).
Tbe deposits of minerals of this group are of hydrothermal origin. The occur in
the form of pockets, lenses, stratified (plastovyye) lenses and layers (zalezha.
They are Contained in metamorphic schists and secondary quartzites (predominantly
Archaean). 50X1

The A1203 content of the kyanites and other minerals of this group varies even
within the same deposit Although. requirements are for an alumina content of at
least 54% ip these ores, in practice ores with. a content of as low as 45% A1203
are used. In some ores the kyanite content sometimesamounts to as much as 9%

I know of a deposit of kyanite in the southern part of Yakutskaya ASSR, in the
northern spurs of the Stanovoy Khrebet (range), 350 kilometers from Bol'shoy Never
station (stantsiya B. Never). This is the so-called Chaynitskoye deposit. I
know also of deposits in Kochkarskiy Rayon in Chelyabinskaya Oblast - the Bori-
sovskoye and Mikhaylovskoye depo its, and deposits on be Kern River ir Shuyeret-
skiy Rayon in Kareliskaya ASSR ow Karelo-Finnish SS . I also know f some
deposits of andalusite.
