Starachowickie Zaklady Gornicze shops (zaklady mechaniCzne) included: gee Enclosure (1) Barracks Of the factory guards (2) "Widia" (Vidia) Division, producing tungsten carbides according toa German patent of Krupp. This division included a section for sinkering_ . plates and grinding machines where "Widia" plates were soldered Li-mldel/ on shank, and edges grounded. Besides the production of new plate all types of tools with "Widia"_plates were sharpened for the entire plant. (3) Projectile shop, machining of artillery projectiles and fuses. The projectile shop included a section for hot pressing of shell cases, further machining, installation of rotating bands, and complete production of fuses. In the basement of the shop was the central boiler shop of the electric enterprises and warehouses for non-ferrous metals. The so-called pickling shop, a section for treating surfaces of metals, operated within- the framework of the projectile shop. (4) Automobile Chassis Division, pressing and welding of automobile chassis on. orders of the Polish PIAT and State Engineering Works (Panstwowe Zaklady Inzynierii). (5) Mechanical Installation Division, operations connected with the maintenance of operations and repair Of eqUipment Of the :White obopa. Buildings (2), (4), (5), and (7) were of teel frame aid ;,FAEnry construction. Type of production 3. Initially, the enterprises included production of 37-milimeter nantitank gees, 40 millimeter Bofors filatiaircraft guns, and 75, 105, and 155-mi11imeter field guns. In 1939, production of Bofors small guns wae eatablished as beltc and 75-millimeter field guns as auxiliary. Other artillery gun production was Iimiten to construction Of prototypes and preparation of their production for other armament plants. Actual production of antitank small guns, however, was taken over by the Engineers and Mechanics Factory (Wytwornia InzynieroweMechanikow) in Pruszkow near Warsaw. Preduction of 75, 105, and 155-millimeter guns was taken over by Southern Enterprises (Zaklady Poludniowe) in Stalowa Wola. The aphere of production of the Starachowice enterprises included construction of guns with the exception of chassis which were produced by the Zieleniewski Enterprises (Zaklady Zieleniewskiego) in Krakow and the Cegielski Enterprises (Zaklady Cegielskiego) in Poznan. Preparation for production consisted of designing; preparation of complete workshop blueprints; planning; and preparation of tools, chucks, and gauges. Part of the work on designing and building was done by the State Gauge Factory (Fanstwowa Wytwornia Sprawdzianow) in Radom. Independent of gun production, Starachowice enterprises planned and produced artillery ammunition 5. especially for : an ft tiaircraartillery. Cust 6X1omers for this production were: Polish army Quantity-of production and its distribution among customers is difficult to establish because of a cryptoneeeous method of freighting to one distribution station of the state railroads. During peace time, production amounted to approximately 15-20 antiaircraft , snns and eight field guns per weeks Technical equipment of Starachowice Enterprises was at a high level; machine tools and equipment were of Polish, UK, and French make Supervisory personnel and workers were highly experienced. 4. From the military viewpoint, Starachowice enterprises VAS an important production center, having access to nearly 14 thousand experienced workers. According to today's standards, it was well equipped technically. The undertaking of any mechanical precision production was possible there. There were shortcomince, however. Starachowice enterprises were too far away from the coal basin and had a water shortage. The daily flow of the Kamienna River, which amounts to an average to 3,600 cubic meters per day, was not sufficient to cover the needs of the housing settlement and the enterprises. Needs during the summer were just about covered by the reservoir. The Starachowice Enterprises could be put out of operation for some time by breaking the dam of the reservoir. Aerial reconnaissance of the machine shops would be relatively easy through orientation of the Kamienna valley. During the spring and summer, the valley is covered wit: heavy fog and locating the works would, be difficult.
