2. Marshal Zhukov, who is $Ilgani n's deputy, grew up with the Soviet
regime. He developed and trained under the direction of such Soviet military
specialists as 2 hachevskv, EEgorov, Shaposhnikov etc. I believe he went
through general staff training in Germany in 192 or 1925. He is a most
determined, able officer and a commander who is capable of executing any
assignment without further direction. He always solved problems placed
before him from above all by himself. On the other hand, he possesses many
cha, acteristics and traits of a person striving to attain higher goals. He
is very ambitious, possesses a strong will power and great
military talents. As a division commander, for instance, 6nukov was razed
as one of the best and his star began to ascend during the conflict with
Japan in Outer Mongolia in 1938. He really carried out a most astounding
operation there and was able to bring the "undeclared ward to a speedy
conclusion. After this Zhukov+s rise was unchecked. During World War II
he stood close to SiLljp and distinguished himself near Moscow where the
Germans made a major break through. He was one of the organizers of Moscow's
defenses and handled his task very well starting in Moscow and ending in
Berlin.
3. The Soviet government did everything in its power to surround Zhukov*s
name with an aura of a hero. This was essential for the soldiers' morale during
the crucial days of World War II. Thanks to the Party and government
support anu his personal qua.Lities, Zhukov reached the post of the Commander-
in?Chief ,!f the Front with Ro osovskv and Konev serving under him.

more than anything else. I IZhukov never hesitated
to shoot anyone personally for failure to carry out his orders during the
war. Everyone in the army knew it and was afraid of him. On the other
hand, Zhukov was liked by his subordinates because there was iron disci-
pline in his units which in turn was responsible for less dishonesty among
the supply element and better food for the troops. His soldiers were well
aware of it and knew that Zhukov was demanding not only toward them, but
also toward the officers, which made him popular with the troops.
Zhukovfs stature, equals that of Tuhachavsky, Blucher or Egorov -- he is
a national figure who.could capture and lead masses -- which is very im-
portant in the Soviet Union. He also is a person around whom there is a
legend of invincibilitymd his opinions are always respected in the Soviet
'Union.
