THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1, There were two chief officers who came directly under the commanding general
of a Soviet Division. One was the Chief of Staff and the other was the
Nachalnik Tile (Chief, Rear). The latter was also deputy commanding general.
It was during the early period of the Russo-German war that the Tila (Rear)
becalm) independent, under the commanding general. The following general staff
sections came under the Chief of Staff of the division: G71 -Operations;
G-2 - Intelligence; G-3 - Communications; G-4 - Personnel; G-5 - Coding and
Decoding (a small section); and G-6 - Topographic (maps). The above staff
structure was applicable as of 1941 and later.
2. Under the divisional Nachalnik Tila were to be found the Medical Chief, the
Veterinary Chief, Food Section, Transport Section, Clothing Section, Finance
Section and other elements. Such officers as Chief of the Divisional Artillery
and the Chiefs of the EngineerspChemical Warfare andTank Troops were directly
under the Commanding General of the division. Also directly under the Commanding
General were the: Voeni Sud (Military Court) and the Voeni Prokuror (Military
Prosecutor).
3. By 1943 the Voenii Kommissari (political commissars)had been made deputy
commanding geners1,1 or deputy commanding officers of units. In effect, there
men remained independent Ind reported to higher ranking political commissars.
All of the political commissars were subordinate to FUR - Politicheskoe
Upravleniye Respubliki (political -dministration of the republic). PUR is sub-
ordinate to the Minister of War. Independent within a military unit was the
Osobi Otdel (a special section of the NKVD). During World 1400 II this section was
called SMERSh (death to the spies). The Osobi Otdel reported only 'we iAav.
