A. There were two garrisons of People's Police and ono of Lorder Police in.
Leipzig. Each People's police Kaserne wayi filled to capacity with four
thousand to five thousand troops each. No tanks or artillery were obscrvcd
in the hands of the People's Police. Most of their vehicles and weapons
were of German origin. The troops were observed marching and appeared
much better at drill than Soviet troops. The number of Soviet advisors
is unknown. The Border Police were being trained by numerous Soviet ad-
visors. Training with dogs was observed. The People's Police have a
groat number of volunteers because there is excessive unemployment in and
around Leipzig, and membership in the police gives security (food, cloth-
ing, shelter and pay). Sever l of my good factory workers left for the
People's Police because of the better conditions.
Soviet officials in ,Leipzig said the Geri .Vas would fight and East Geri,= z
units could be turned into armored units in a very short time due to the
high percentage of World War II veterans. The discipline of the Proplc's
Police was far stricter than the Soviet Army and even the World brat II
German Army. The Soviets are reviving Prussianism in songs, marches, etc.
and the youths are enthusiastic, therefore becoming fanatics. Th ,re is
more political indoctrination in the People's Police than in the Soviet

.Army. At present, high Soviet officials believe the People's Police can be
counted on for police duties (internal segurity).
An unknown number of East Germans are sent to the USSR for training in
intermediate-level schools.
